‘Stangs get first district win since ‘10

Though it had been an eternity — almost two years — since winning a district game, it didn’t take Sweet-water long to seize control of Tuesday’s 5-3A contest at Mustang Gym with Snyder.
After falling behind 3-2 less than two minutes into the contest, the Mustangs promptly went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-3 lead midway through the first quarter. Sweetwater never gave up the lead after that.
And with sophomore post Kaleb Hoover scoring 19 of his 25 points in the second half, the Mustangs (1-3, 10-17) gradually pulled away to claim a 54-41 win.

Lady Mustangs hold on to beat Snyder for first 5-3A win, 49-43

The Sweetwater girls bas-ketball team struggled early against Snyder in the teams’ District 5-3A game Tuesday at Mustangs, then lost two key starters to fouls in the fourth quarter after building a 12-point lead.
But the Lady Mustangs persevered to get their first win in district play, 49-43, over the Lady Tigers.
Sweetwater (1-4, 15-15) found itself trailing 11-2 and 13-4 in the first quarter un-til finally getting untracked.
Kendra Crosson’s basket gave the Lady Mustangs their first lead, 18-17, with 3:19 left before halftime.

JV and freshman boys are winners

The Sweetwater junior varsity and freshman boys basketball teams both came away with wins over Snyder here Tuesday in sub-varsity district contests.
The JV boys won 46-42 as they got 15 points from Trey Taylor and overcame a two-point deficit by outscoring Snyder 14-8 in the fourth quarter to improve to 2-2 in district and 15-8 overall. Brandon Howell and Quentin Wetsel had eight points, Mike McCoy six, Marquees Jenkins five and Deandre Gatson four for the Mustangs.
Sweetwater led 12-11 after one quarter, but trailed 25-23 at halftime and 34-32 after three quarters.

JV girls suffer 1st district defeat, but freshman girls win

Sweetwater’s sub-varsity girls basketball teams came away with a split when they hosted Snyder on Tuesday.
The JV girls, who are 16-5 overall, lost for the first time in district play as they fell to Snyder, 52-49.
But the freshman girls fared much better, winning 44-24 to improve to 15-4 this season.
