Blackwell’s 58-54 Six-Man win over Panther Creek this past Friday means the Hornets will be taking on Loraine in the bi-district playoffs this Friday.
The teams will meet at 7 p.m. at Hermleigh, with Blackwell considered the home team. The winner will advance to face either Welch Dawson or Balmorhea in the area round.
Blackwell, the runnerup in District 8, Division II, is 5-5 overall. Loraine, which beat Trent 48-34 to claim the District 7 title, is 6-4.
Blackwell’s victory this past week put the Hornets in the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
ABILENE — Sweetwater knew coming into Friday’s season finale at Wylie that its playoff hopes rested on a near-flawless effort on both sides of the ball, plus some outside help. But it was second-ranked Wylie that had that kind of game instead as the unbeaten Bulldogs (10-0 overall, 5-0 in District 4-3A) struck early and often for a 55-20 victory which ended the Mustangs’ year.
The Sweetwater freshman football team ended its season by beating Wylie 16-6 here on Thursday.
Sweetwater trailed Wylie 6-0 before scoring on the last 16 points.
D’Jaman West scored on a 15-yard run to tie the game and Adrian Vizzerra caught a two-point pass to give Sweetwater the lead. A 50-yard fumble return by Max Nemir for a touchdown extended the lead to 14-6, and Vizzerra ran over the two-point PAT to complete Sweetwater’s comeback.
Sweetwater had several standouts on both sides of the ball against Wylie.
Blackwell’s football team secured its first postseason berth since the 2008 seas-on by edging Panther Creek, 58-54, on Friday.
This also marks only the second time that Blackwell has reached the playoffs since the 2002 season. The team will advance to face Loraine in bi-district at Hermleigh this Friday.
