Sweetwater High School’s basketball teams made the short trip to Merkel on Tuesday and lost both ends of their doubleheader.
Merkel girls 55, Sweetwater girls 19
Merkel, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, defeated Sweet-water (7-6) for the second time in five days. The Lady Badgers won 47-33 when the teams met last Friday at Ballinger’s three-day tour-nament in a game Sweetwa-ter led at halftime. But it was never a contest this time as Merkel (14-0) led 14-4, 31-8 and 45-12 at the breaks.
Six Sweetwater players have earned first team all-District 4-3A football honors and sophomore quarterback Kaegan Jeffrey is the co-newcomer of the year.
Three of the first team-ers — senior Willie Norman, junior Kaleb Hoover and sophomore Bray Amos — are wide receivers while the other three are on defense — senior lineman Tadeo Canon-Masjoan, senior linebacker Ryan Linebaugh and sophomore defensive back Isaiah McGee.
The Sweetwater boys and girls basketball teams both finished in fourth place at their respective weekend tournaments in Ballinger.
Sweetwater’s boys (2-3) lost to Clyde 59-46 in their third-place game Saturday. Deandre Gatson led Sweet-water with 16 points.
The Mustangs had defea-ted Hawley 43-29 to open the tournament on Thurs-day and advanced to Frid-ay’s semifinal before losing to Ballinger 50-48. Jim Ned won the title by defeating Ballinger 63-29 on Satur-day. Two Sweetwater play-ers were named to the all-tournament team — junior Dylan Bennett and sopho-more Rhett Torres.
The Highland girls won all four of their games this past weekend to capture the title at Bronte’s tournament.
Highland (9-2) had little trouble beating any of its opponents at the round-robin event. After routing Hamlin 56-30 on Thursday, the Lady Hornets knocked off Miles 55-28 on Friday and then completed the tournament by whipping Bronte (40-14) and Winters (57-19) on Saturday.
