BIG SPRING — Desper-ately needing a win to have any realistic hopes of getting to the playoffs, visiting Sweetwater was down by just four points (26-22) against Big Spring after starting out the third quarter of Tuesday’s District 5-3A game with a 5-0 run.
But Big Spring answered that surge, which included a 3-pointer by Kendra Cros-son followed by Crosson’s steal and layup, with a resounding run of its own. The Lady Steers (3-3) scored the next 23 points to put the game out of reach and claim a 53-31 victory.
BIG SPRING — There were a lot of positive signs for Sweetwater on Tuesday, even though the Mustangs fell to Big Spring 48-37 and saw their playoff chances take a major hit.
The Mustangs held an opponent to under 50 points for the second consecutive game, while allowing just three in the opening quarter. And while the Mustangs struggled again offensively, they trailed by just two, 19-17, at halftime and later cut a 16-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to just nine (45-36) with 2:47 left in the game.
The Highland girls basketball team, already assured of the playoffs, kept up its winning ways on Tuesday while Roscoe’s girls also got a big victory to keep their postseason chances alive.
Nine players scored as Highland routed Trent, 61-26, to improve to 21-7 overall and 9-2 in District 11-A, Division II.
Kara Hughey scored 12 points and Beth Richburg 11 for the Lady Hornets, while Sierra Allen scored nine points, Lora Stewart eight, Madison Moseley, Morgan Monroe and Jes-sica McCain five, Megan Thompson four and Kay-lee Martin two.
