After a season-opening tie at San Angelo Lake View and splitting four games this past weekend at Lake View’s tournament, Sweetwater almost overcame two six-run deficits Tuesday against 5A San Angelo Central in the Mustangs’ home open-er. But the Bobcats held off a serious threat in the sixth inning, and held off another potential rally in the seventh for a 10-6 victory.
Sweetwater trailed 10-4 when Stephen May tripled with two outs to score Shawn Campbell and Cole Maxwell in the sixth inning and chase Central’s starting pitcher Jake Butler.
February 28th
Sweetwater High School’s softball team is back on the road for a game at Merkel at 4 p.m. today.
Sweetwater is 6-2 overall after winning two of its three games at Sweetwater’s tournament. The Lady Mus-tangs began their event with a 13-2 win over Perryton this past Friday at the Jerry Collins Complex, lost to Clyde 8-5 later that day and beat Colorado City 6-3 in their final game Saturday.
The Sweetwater High School girls golf team shot a two-day total of 776 at the Sweetwater Classic for a third-place finish this past weekend.
Only Abilene High (707) and Abi-lene Cooper (719) finished ahead of Sweetwater, which was in fourth place after an opening 385 on Friday but moved up one position on Saturday after a finishing 391. Jim Ned (793) and Wylie (801) completed the top five, while Sweetwater’s No. 2 team shot 866 to place eighth and the No. 3 team shot 951 to place 12th among the 14 teams in the field.
After today, the Sweetwa-ter baseball team finally says goodbye to San Angelo.
Following a season-opening tie at Class 4A San Angelo Lake View and a split of its four games at Lake View’s tournament this past week, the Mustangs will host the Class 5A San Angelo Central Bobcats at 7 p.m. today at Newman Park.
February 27th
A total of 24 high school powerlifters from Sweetwater — 10 girls and 14 boys — advanced to regional competition when Sweetwater hosted the final qualifying meet on Feb. 18.
The 10 girls qualifiers — representing every Sweetwater powerlifters who competed at Sweetwater’s meet — are Joslyn Rosas, Loni Mendez, Lexi Perez, Dana Hohn, Cari Aguilar, Kimmie Lomas, Allie Zavaleta, Bri Painter, Valerie Zavaleta and Alexis Thompson. This year’s girls regional meet will be held Saturday in Monahans.
