May 5th
ABILENE â John Paul Cain of Sweetwater, who first made a name for himself as a college golfer at Texas Tech University and later as an amateur golfer and two-time winner on the Senior PGA Tour, will be among nine new inductees into the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame on Monday.
The 11th annual Big Country Hall of Fame induction banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Abilene Civic Center.
Zach Harrell and John Ward are the new football offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively, at Sweetwater High School under Shane Mobley, who was hired in April to serve as Sweetwaterâs head football coach and athletic director.
Four Sweetwater residents had top-two finishes at the 37th annual Colorado River Bike Fest held April 28 in Ballinger.
Francisco Herrera won the 5K bike rideâs men adult division (ages 18-59) and Cassie Reyes was second in the women adult division (18-59). Michelle Mabrey won the women adult division (18-59) in the 5K event and Kirk Maberry was second among men in the 60K event.

Several Sweetwater High School powerlifters who recently competed at state meets were honored Monday at a meeting of the Sweetwater Independent School District. Resolutions which recognized the athletes for their accomplishments were presented at the meeting.

Joe Banyard â a former Sweetwater High School athlete who spent his last two collegiate seasons as a star running back at the University of Texas-El Paso â is scheduled to be in Jacksonville, Fla. today to begin a three-day NFL rookie minicamp after signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent.
Banyard is one of the teamâs 17 undrafted rookie free agents, which include LSU defensive end Kendrick Adams, Ohio State center Mike Brewster and Virginia Tech receiver Jarrett Boykin.

A Resolution honoring the 2012 Sweetwater High School Power Lifting Girls State Qualifiers was presented at the April Sweetwater Independent School District School Board meeting. Pictured receiving the resolution are (left to right) Loni Mendez, Cari Aguilar, Joslyn Rosas and Lexie Perez. Also in attendance was the Girls Power Lifting Coach Liz Miller.
The final outcome of Sat-urdayâs Class 3A bi-district softball playoff in Graham may not have been satisfy-ing for Sweetwater fans, but the 9-0 loss to Iowa Park told only part of the story.
Those who (like me) have followed the local high school sports scene in recent years have no doubt noticed how little success Sweetwater has had, especially in the âteamâ sports. But the schoolâs softball program, which had endured the longest playoff drought â 15 years â of any of them, at least did its part to change that.
