Shane Mobley didnât get to see as much of his team as he had hoped due to lightning and rain that halted Sweetwaterâs season-opening scrimmage against Wichita Falls Hirschi after 55 minutes here Saturday.
But the new Sweetwater head football coach still saw some encouraging signs when the Mustangs were on the field, especially on the offensive side of the ball.
NEW ORLEANS â Ex-Sweetwater High and University of Texas-El Paso star Joseph Banyard, now with the New Orleans Saints, played in his third exhibition game Friday as the Saints lost to the Jack-sonville Jaguars 27-24.
Banyard, who recently signed a three-year con-tract with the Saints as a rookie free agent, finished the game with 6 yards rushing on two carries and also caught two passes for 17 yards. It was the first time Banyard had not led the team in rushing during exhibition play. Banyard has rushed for 51 yards on 14 carries and also caught four passes for 20 yards in three games.
Roscoeâs football team played its first of two scrimmages on Friday, when it hosted Haskell on Plowboy Fieldâs new turf which was installed after last season.
The scrimmage was delayed almost an hour due to threatening weather in the area but still drew a good turnout.
Also, Blackwell held its first scrimmage Friday when the Hornets traveled to Hermleigh while both Sweetwater and Highland were scheduled to hold their first scrimmages Saturday.
