Irion County didn’t com-plete a pass, had 85 yards in penalties, committed four turnovers and its first two possessions ended with fumbles on Roby’s side of the field Saturday at the Sammy Baugh Classic.
But Roby failed to take full advantage and committed several mistakes as well that proved costly. In the end, the Hornets were able to break a 14-14 halftime tie and pull out a 30-20 win over the Lions in the season opener for both teams.
Saturday’s final game of the Sammy Baugh Classic had one of the most intriguing matchups in the event’s history: a battle between a pair of perennial Class 4A playoff teams located more than 600 miles apart.
And in the first quarter alone, it had a 65-yard kickoff return to open the game plus a Classic-record 82-yard punt and a safety.
But the game ultimately proved to be onesided, as Everman easily defeated El Paso Del Valle 48-10.
