Roscoe landed four of its players on the all-District 7-A, Division II first team that was released this past week, while several other players also earned district recognition.
One of the districtâ€™s top honors went to Roscoe freshman Vincent Pantoja, who shared the districtâ€™s defensive newcomer of the year honor with Hamlinâ€™s Marcos Rojas.
Roscoeâ€™s four District 7-A, Division II first team selections were defensive lineman Landon Jones, cornerback Brant Burnett, utility player Chris Deleon and receiver Shelton Toliver. Deleon, Burnett and Jones are seniors while Toliver is a junior.
BANGS â€” The Sweetwa-ter High School boys bas-ketball team saw a furious fourth-quarter rally come up just short Friday as the Mustangs lost at Bangs, 47-44, despite outscoring their hosts 16-6 in the final eight minutes of play.
Only one Nolan County area varsity basketball team â€” the 14-3 Highland girls â€” won Friday. Sierra Allen had 25 points as Highland beat Hamlin 42-38. Hannah Allen had seven, Schyler Kimbrell six, Sydny Helbert four and Madison Moseley two for the Lady Hornets, who were up 34-23 after three periods and held off a big Hamlin rally in the final quarter at Highland.
In the other girls games on Friday, Roscoe lost to Forsan 36-23 in non-dis-trict while Blackwell was defeated 70-9 by Garden City in a District 14-A, Div-ision II contest.
Roscoeâ€™s JV girls basketball team won second place at Bronteâ€™s tournament on Dec. 8.
Roscoe defeated host team Bronte 29-14 in its first game, advancing the team to the championship against Miles where Roscoe lost by a score of 33-26.
Samantha Ortega scored nine points against Miles and also had 12 points vs. Bronte, while Olivia Rovig had nine against Bronte and Dani Dean six vs. Miles.
Wylie defeated Sweetwa-ter Middle Schoolâ€™s boys basketball teams in all four games that were played here on Thursday. The seventh grade Red lost to Wylie, 29-25, despite 12 points by Kiante McCoy and 10 from Michael Green. Kobe Clark scored two points and Isak Alvarez one. Wylie won, 32-12, over the seventh grade White with Daniel Avila scoring five, Mikwuan Jones three, Kurt Wetsel two and Jose Solis and Jac-ob Trevino one.
Dylan Bennett takes a shot for Sweetwater while being guarded by a pair of Brownwood defenders in Tuesdayâ€™s non-district game at Mustang Gym.
Bennett scored 22 points in leading the Mustangs past the Lions, 63-60. The boys travel to Bangs for another non-district game at 7:30 p.m. today while the Lady Mustangs continue non-district play Saturday with an 11:30 a.m. game at Graham.
Both teams host Colorado City next Tuesday.
Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s freshman boys and JV girls basketball teams still have spotless season records after knocking off Brownwood teams here on Tuesday.
Sweetwaterâ€™s JV girls are 12-0 after their 41-26 win. Cierra Knox had 12 points, Shaneese Brown nine, Mad-die Jones eight, Jaya Atkins four, Lexi Castillo three, Bianca Castillo and Nisha Williams two and Abby McPherson one. Sweetwater led 9-2, 18-11 and 32-15 at the breaks.
A pair of Sweetwater Middle School boys basketball teams won first-place honors when SMS hosted a two-day tournament this past Friday and Saturday.
Sweetwater No. 2 won the seventh grade division after beating Merkel 28-4, Snyder 31-20 and Sweetwater No. 1 24-16. The No. 1 team beat Snyder 22-20 and Merkel 14-5 and placed second.
Sweetwater No. 1 won the eighth grade division after beating Snyder 21-12 and Merkel 37-20 and tying Sweetwater No. 2 17-17. Sweetwater No. 2 also lost to Merkel 32-14 and fell to Snyder 19-18.

FRIDAY, DEC. 14
Sweetwater boys at Bangs â€” freshmen at 4:30 p.m., JV at 6 p.m., varsity at 7:30 p.m.
Roscoe JV and varsity teams host Forsan starting at 4 p.m.
Highland JV and varsity teams at Hamlin starting at 4 p.m.
Blackwell JV and varsity boys host Borden County starting at 5 p.m.
Blackwell varsity girls play at Garden City, 6:30 p.m.
Sweetwater High School will honor its 2012 fall sports athletes with a banquet Thursday, Jan. 10 starting at 6 p.m. at the Nolan County Coliseum annex.
Athletes in football, cross country and volleyball will be recognized for their hard work and dedication. Also, Sweetwaterâ€™s cheerleaders and trainers will be intro-duced and thanked for their support. A highlight video will be shown. The Mustang Booster Club will also have a silent auction to support the athletes. Tickets are $12 and available until Monday, Jan. 7 at 4 p.m. at the high school fieldhouse, and will not be sold at the door.
