JV girls are still unbeaten through 10 games

Shaneese Brown had 19 points and five other play-ers scored as the Sweetwat-er JV girls basketball team improved to 10-0 by defeat-ing the Abernathy JV girls, 40-28, here Tuesday.
Trailing 9-6 at the end of the first quarter, Sweetwater outscored Abernathy 34-19 the rest of the way. Abby McPherson and Cierra Knox each had six points while Morgan Whitley had four, Maddie Jones three and Bianca Castillo two for Sweetwater.

Basketball tournament season begins Thursday

With the month of Dec-ember almost here, the basketball tournament season is set to arrive as several Nolan County high school teams compete in three-day events starting Thursday.
The Sweetwater girls and boys are in Ballinger, while Blackwell hosts its annual Oak Creek Classic. Highland’s varsity boys and JV girls are also in Blackwell’s tournament, while the Highland varsity girls are going to Bronte.
Here are the area tournament schedules:

Finn is perfect in debut for HSU

Former Sweetwater High School athlete Alicia Finn had a perfect shooting day from the field on Saturday against Trinity University when she made her debut for the Hardin-Simmons University girls basketball team, helping them to a 77-75 victory at Trinity’s Thanksgiving tournament in San Antonio. Finn, a freshman, had four points in the game for the Cowgirls as she made her only field goal attempt in the contest and also sank both of her free throw shots.

Bowl is set to host two more playoffs

Another busy weekend of high school playoff football action is scheduled at Mus-tang Bowl with two more games on tap.
On Friday, a pair of Class 3A schools, Midland Green-wood and Graham, meet at 7:30 p.m. in a Division II regional. Greenwood, the No. 3 team in District 4-3A, is 9-3 while Graham, the champion of District 5-3A, is 11-1. The winner will face either Monahans or Gates-ville, who also play Friday, in the state quarterfinals.

Six spikers honored

Six members of Sweetwa-ter High School’s volleyball team have garnered all-District 4-3A recognition.
Setter Suede Shirley and outside hitter Kendra Cros-son made the all-District 4-3A first team. Middle blockers Kathleen Campbell and Shelby Cason and outside hitter-middle blocker Kelsi Crosson were all named to the second team, and libero Janell Walker earned all-district honorable mention. All six players are seniors.
This is the third straight year for Shirley, Kendra Crosson and Campbell to be named either first- or second-team all-district.

Hamlin, Bangs advance at Bowl

Hamlin and Bangs ad-vanced to the next round of the state playoffs after winning Friday in an area-round playoff doublehea-der at Mustang Bowl.

Hamlin 21, Eldorado 17
Hamlin led 14-3 after three quarters, but the Pied Pipers found them-selves trailing 17-14 after Eldorado came up with two fourth-quarter touchdowns in the span of a little over three minutes.

Formula One racing in Texas

Former Sweetwater ISD superintendent Steve Maikell was in Austin last weekend to see the first Formula One race on American soil since 2007 and submitted these pictures to the Reporter.
Shown below during the final qualifying is eventual race winner Lewis Hamilton, who on Sunday drove his McLaren car to victory in the U.S. Grand Prix. Hamilton held off Sebastian Vettel for the final 14 laps to capture his fourth victory of the 2012 season.
The race was held on Austin’s new $400 million Circuit of the Americas track that was completed this past June.
