All-district Hornets

November 29, 2013

First came a 10-win sea-son, the first in 17 years.
As a result, 10 Blackwell players have been chosen to the all-District 8, Division II six-man team as a tribute to the Hornets’ season which saw them win the district title and advance past the bi-district round for the first time since 1996.
Blackwell’s Jayden Jones and Matthew Lowry were named the District 8, Divi-sion II offensive and defensive MVPs, respectively.

Six Lady ‘Stangs receive honors in 4-3A

A total of six Sweetwater High School athletes have earned all-District 4-3A vol-leyball recognition for their outstanding play during the 2013 season.
Senior Aly Heredia and sophomore Morgan Gomez were named to the 4-3A first team, wihle seniors Kayla Chowning and Shaneese Brown both made the sec-ond team. Junior Maddie Jones and sophomore Mikeilah Foust earned all-district honorable mention. It was the first time any of the six Lady Mustangs have received all-district honors.

SW girls fall at Abernathy, 66-51

Sweetwater fell behind 22-10 at Abernathy in the teams’ non-district girls basketball game Tuesday in part because of difficulties handling the press.
Though the Lady Mus-tangs were able to close the gap to six points in the sec-ond period, they never com-pletely recovered and lost the game, 66-51.
“We had 24 turnovers,” said Sweetwater coach Al Miller, whose team’s record dropped to 2-3. “We kind of shot ourselves in the foot and we got outhustled a bit. They were a little quicker than we were.”

Mustangs are 2-0 after getting a win at Stanton

Sweetwater’s boys basket-ball team is now 2-0 for the season after winning 43-37 at Stanton on Monday.
Sweetwater fell behind 15-13 after one quarter, but outscored its hosts 11-4 in the second period to go up 24-19 at halftime and led 35-30 after three quarters.
Dylan Bennett scored 13 points to lead Sweetwater. Kaleb Hoover scored nine, J.P. Poe and Rhett Torres six, Marquees Jenkins four, De’andre Gatson three and Jacob Peyton two.

Weather forces several changes to local, area basketball schedules

November 22, 2013

The winter weather that blew in late Thursday and early Friday caused several changes to area basketball schedules.
Sweetwater's JV and varsity boys and varsity girls have cancelled tonight's games at Stanton, although both boys teams have rescheduled their games for Monday. Details will be in Sunday's sports section. Sweetwater boys coach Al Hunt also said that the JV and varsity boys home games with Wall that were scheduled Tuesday are cancelled. The freshman boys will play their game Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the main high school gym, however.

Cowboys lasso Blackwell with dominating win

RANKIN — After winning the coin flip, Blackwell elected to receive the ball to start Thursday’s Six-Man Division II regional playoff against Grandfalls-Royalty.
Only one problem. The Hornets failed to recover the onside kickoff and the Cowboys scored to go ahead 6-0. And it got worse.
Grandfalls-Royalty — ranked No. 2 in Six-Man Division II — tried and recovered two more onside kickoffs, and scored after both of them, to take a 21-0 lead before the Hornets finally got possession.

Highland girls reach semis at Key City event

ABILENE — They may play in the state’s smallest classification, but on Thurs-day the Highland girls bas-ketball team — ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, Division II — proved that it could more than hold its own against much bigger schools at the Polk-Key City Classic.
Highland ran its record to 7-0 by beating Class 4A El Paso Irvin 42-21 and Class 5A Odessa Permian 55-51 on the first day of the tour-nament, which ends Satur-day. In doing so, the Lady Hornets reached today’s championship semifinals.
