SW set to travel after return to 4A

Sweetwater head football coach Shane Mobley knew big changes might be coming for his program starting with the 2014 season.
And Monday, the Univer-sity Interscholastic League made it official. Sweetwater — which dropped from Class 4A to 3A back in 2000 — will return to Class 4A for at least the next two years.
But this time, it’s because the UIL is renaming all of its classifications to include a Class 6A for the biggest schools. The Mustangs will be in Class 4A, Division II.

Shallowater, Graham here on Friday

Two undefeated teams play here at 7 p.m. Friday as Shallowater and Graham meet in a Class 3A, Division II state quarterfinal at Mus-tang Bowl. Both squads have perfect 13-0 marks and were state-ranked at the end of the regular season.

Hoop tourneys are set to begin

If the expected icy weather doesn’t interfere, all eight Nolan County high school varsity basketball teams — plus a handful of sub-varsity and junior high squads — will play in tournaments that are scheduled to begin today around the area.
The Sweetwater girls were scheduled to play twice today at Stanton’s tourney that ends Saturday, while the boys’ first tournament pool game at Stanton will be at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
The top three teams in each pool will advance to championship play on Sat-urday.

Blackwell’s teams split

December 5, 2013

Matt Lowry scored 24 points and Mason Magness added 14 as Blackwell’s boys basketball team beat West-brook 55-30 on Tuesday, giving Blackwell a split of the doubleheader.
Wade Allen and Ethan Andrews (5 points), Jayden Jones (3 points) and Cole Alley (2 points) also scored for Blackwell, now 2-0 this season. But Westbrook won 36-30 over Blackwell’s girls to prevent a sweep.
Blackwell (1-2) was paced by Hailey Bennett’s 12-point effort while Stephanie Met-calf had nine, Brooklyn Harris and Shianne Solis four and Crystal Chavez one for the Lady Hornets.
