The Blackwell girls tipped off District 14-A, Division II basketball play on Tuesday with a 37-22 home win over Veribest. Hailey Bennett and Brooklyn Harris each had 10 points for the Lady Hornets (3-2 overall), who led just 11-9 at halftime but used a 17-6 third-quarter surge to pull away.
Stephanie Metcalf scored eight points, Halee Sander-son five and Shianne Solis and Bailey McGlothlin had two points for Blackwell, which will have a much tougher district assignment on Friday when it hosts Garden City, which is currently ranked No. 6 in Class 1A, Division II.
There are still four unbeaten basketball teams in the county after Highlandâ€˜s two teams and the Sweetwater boys won on the road Tues-day. Highlandâ€™s girls and boys routed Guthrie 53-29 and 57-29, respectively, while the Sweetwater boys won 70-54 at Brownwood.
Both the Sweetwater and Highland boys are 4-0 for the year as are Blackwellâ€™s boys, who were idle, while the Highland girls are 9-0 and still No. 1 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll in Class 1A, Division II.
Roscoeâ€™s junior high boys basketball teams won recent games to remain undefeated for the young season.
Roscoeâ€™s â€˜Aâ€™ team is 5-0 after winning 36-31 over Highland and 42-7 against Loraine. The â€˜Bâ€™ team (4-0) also played Highland and won, 26-11.
Jose Ortega had 12, Camden Boren seven, Cle-mente Aguayo and Jayden Gonzales four, Francisco Garcia three, Tagen Adkins and Parker Payne two and Tait Fullwood one for the â€˜Aâ€™ team vs. Highland while for Roscoe â€˜Bâ€™, Mason Hernan-dez had 10, J.R. Guia and Aaron Thomas four and Tristan Brooks, Andrew DeLeon, Nicholas Limones and Will Thomas two.

Roscoe junior high â€˜Aâ€™ girls and boys host Loraine at 5 and 6 p.m., respectively.
Highland junior high girls and boys play at Hermleigh starting at 6 p.m.

Roscoe boys host San Angelo TLC â€” JV at 5 p.m., varsity at 8 p.m.

Highlandâ€™s football team had a total of 13 players who received all-District 7, Division I recognition for their outstanding play.
Players on the Sweetwater Mustangs White Flag football team hold up championship trophies after they defeated the No. 1-ranked Abilene Longhorns Black football team for the Super Bowl championship this past Sunday. The game was held at McMurry University. The Mustangs, ranked No. 6, won 20-19 in a very exciting contest.

Several Sweetwater bas-ketball teams had to cancel scheduled games Thursday at local and area tourna-ments due to icy weather conditions. The same was true for the Highland and Roscoe boys and girls bas-ketball teams, who were to begin play at Highlandâ€™s an-nual Hilltop Classic.
Blackwellâ€™s two varsity teams were the only ones from Nolan County to play as the weather took its toll around the state.
Also, the Graham-Shal-lowater quarterfinal playoff at Sweetwaterâ€™s Mustang Bowl was moved from 7 p.m. today to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Sweetwater head football coach Shane Mobley knew big changes might be coming for his program starting with the 2014 season.
And Monday, the Univer-sity Interscholastic League made it official. Sweetwater â€” which dropped from Class 4A to 3A back in 2000 â€” will return to Class 4A for at least the next two years.
But this time, itâ€™s because the UIL is renaming all of its classifications to include a Class 6A for the biggest schools. The Mustangs will be in Class 4A, Division II.
