Area 6-man players earn TSMCA honors

A total of nine players from Blackwell and Highland have garnered either all-state or all-region football recognition from the Texas Six-Man Coaches Association in Region II.
Three Blackwell players got all-state recogni-tion. Quarterback Matthew Lowry made the TSMCA first team, while Jayden Jones was named to the second team at linebacker. Jones also received all-state honorable mention at run-ning back for the second straight year, and kicker Wade Allen also received all-state honorable mention from the TSMCA.

SMS boys win two titles at B’ridge tourney

Two of the boys basketball teams — from Sweetwater Middle School came away with championships on Dec. 14 at a one-day tournament played in Breckenridge.
The eighth grade Red had wins over Mineral Wells (31-13), Snyder (27-22) and finally Breckenridge (42-32) in the title game.
Against Mineral Wells, Kobe Clark led the way with 10 points while Isak Alvar-ez and Kiante McCoy had seven, Chris Thompson five and Jacob Trevino and Reg-gie Walker one.

Roscoe teams stay unbeaten

Both of Roscoe’s junior high boys basketball teams will finish 2013 undefeated after wins over Hermleigh this past Monday that leaves them with 6-0 records.
Roscoe ‘A’ won its contest, 35-13, with Hermleigh despite a scoreless second half. Jose Ortega and Tait Fullwood led the win with 12 points each. Also scoring were Francisco Garcia with three points and Parker Payne, Paul Pantoja, John Castillo and Camden Boren with two. Roscoe ‘B’ also won, 28-15. Nicholas Limones and Mas-on Hernandez had eight points, Andrew Deleon four and Will Thomas, Aaron Thomas, Ty Fullwood and Jr Guia with two.

All-District 7-1A

The all-District 7-1A, Division II football team has been released, and Roscoe quarterback Cutter Davila, wide receiver Shelton Toli-ver, defensive end Seb-astian Benivamondez and utility player Jesus Leanos — are all on the first team.
Also, Max Nemir was named as 7-1A’s co-defen-sive newcomer of the year.
Leanos and Rafael Aguayo are on the 7-1A second team at two positions each — Leanos at receiver and cornerback, and Aguayo at both receiver and inside linebacker. Honorable mention was given to defensive tackle Zack Longoria.

Blackwell boys start out district by beating Paint Rock

Blackwell split a District 14-1A basketball doubleheader against Paint Rock on Tuesday.
The boys, who are 7-2 overall, began district with a 68-37 win. Matt Lowry had 25 points to pace the victo-ry. Mason Magness added 14, Jayden Jones 13, Ethan Andrews 12 and Wade Allen four. Blackwell led 24-19 at halftime, then turned it on by outscoring Paint Rock 44-18 in the second half.

Plowboys fall, 44-38

The Roscoe boys basket-ball team lost a 44-38 de-cision to Haskell on Tues-day in Roscoe.
The Plowboys, now 1-7 overall, led 33-32 after three periods — only to fall victim to a Haskell surge in the final quarter. Roscoe’s Jesus Leanos led all scorers as he poured in 20 points.
Roscoe held a 13-10 lead after the first period, and the Plowboys led 25-22 at halftime.
Roscoe also got eight points from Javier Leanos, who is Jesus’ brother, six points from Luis Villa and four points by Kevin Lavalais.
