Enrollment numbers for teams are in parentheses. The top four teams from each Class 3A district qualify for the playoffs; the two largest enrollments go to the Division I bracket and the two smaller schools go to Division II. In Class 1A, the top three teams in each district in both divisions — built off enrollment figures determined before the season — make the playoffs.

Kids fishing tourney July 20

The Sweetwater Kiwanis Club and Sweetwater Lake & Marina will be holding a Kids Fishing Tournament on Saturday, July 20 for children ages 3-16.
The fishing tournament will be held from 8-10:30 a.m. at the Lake Sweetwater boat ramp, with lunch and prizes to follow.
Participants can pre-register for the event at the Sweetwater Lake & Marina or register on the morning of the tournament.

Summer sports camps set

There are still a few summer sports camps left for local students to attend before the new school year begins.
A Mustang Golf Camp will be held July 16-18 at Sweetwater Country Club for ages 6 and up.
Sessions are from 9-11 a.m. each day. The cost of the camp will be $60 per child, with family discounts available.
For more information, call camp instructors Sarah Cumbie at 325-338-5407 or Ashley Timm at 325-338-8055.
A Mustang Football Camp will be held July 22-25 at Mustang Bowl from 7:30-10:30 a.m. daily for students entering grades 3-9.

Team Camp tournament champs

Several members of next year’s Highland High School girls basketball team recently attended a Team Camp that was held at Lubbock Christian University.
At the camp, they participated in a tournament where they won eight of their nine games en route to claiming the tournament championship in the Grey Division.
Highland went 5-1 in pool play before taking all three of their games in the championship round.

Jr Leaguers eliminated by Eastern, 16-13

ABILENE — Javier Olguin was a one-man wrecking crew Tuesday for Sweet-water’s Junior League All-Stars.
Olguin enjoyed a perfect night at the plate as he went 3-for-3 with a grand slam home run and eight RBIs, including a pair of two-run doubles plus an intentional walk in his other at bat.
But Sweetwater still came up short as it was eliminated, 16-13, by Abilene Eastern in the teams’ losers bracket semifinal of the District 5 tournament at Abilene Wylie’s field.
Eastern faces either Wylie or Abilene South in the losers bracket final today.

Jr League all-stars are only SW team still alive at district tourneys

The Junior League (ages 13-14) all-stars are the last remaining Sweetwater team at District 5 Little League tournaments in Abilene.
The Junior Leaguers, who began the tournament by going 0-2 in pool play, got bracket play off to a rousing start with dominating wins over Jim Ned (25-4) and Snyder (19-9) before suffering their first loss, 22-5, to Wylie on Saturday.
But Sweetwater is still alive after Monday’s 11-10 win over Abilene North that advanced it into today’s losers bracket semifinal. The team plays Abilene Eastern at Wylie’s field at 6 p.m.

Local all-star teams continue District 5 play

The 10-11 year-olds play their final pool game today. Results from all four of the local teams’ most recent games will be in Tuesday’s paper.
