Sweetwater 7th and 8th grade ‘A’ teams will be hosting Wall at 5:45 and 7 p.m., respectively.
Sweetwater freshman and JV teams at Wall at 5 and 6:30 p.m., respectively.
Roscoe junior high and JV teams are open.
Highland junior high and JV teams at Sands at 5:30 and 7 p.m., respectively.
Blackwell junior high at Trent, 6 p.m. (JV is open)

Amos, Jeffrey set records at Classic

Friday’s 51-33 win over Breckenridge proved to be a record-setting night for two Sweetwater players, Bray Amos and Kaegan Jeffrey, at the Sammy Baugh Classic.

Three of the four Sweet-water Middle School teams began their 2013 football seasons last week by win-ning, with all four games in Sweetwater.
8th grade Red 26, Breckenridge 0
Chris Thompson not only threw touchdown passes of 40 yards to Tristan Longoria and 35 yards to Daniel Avila, but also had a 2-yard TD run and a 2-point conversion run. Avila also had a 2-yard TD run. All of Sweetwater’s scoring came in the first half.

Lubbock teams win dual match with SW

A pair of Lubbock teams prevailed over Sweetwater’s volleyball team Saturday in a dual match played at Lubbock Cooper.
Sweetwater dropped its opening match to Cooper by a 3-1 count (15-25, 8-25, 25-21, 10-25), and fell 3-0 to Lubbock Monterey by scores of 11-25, 20-25, 16-25.
The Lady Mustangs (8-14) will play a single match today at Miles before returning home Sept. 24 to play Levelland.

Eagles provide ‘Classic’ finale by scoring late TD vs. Booker

In a game that featured the state’s single-season record holder for passing yardage in Class 1A, an unheralded running back from a first-year program came up with the winning touchdown here Saturday.
Leddy French’s 2-yard run broke a 22-22 deadlock with just 19 seconds left to play, giving Brock a 28-22 victory over Booker to end the ninth annual Sammy Baugh Classic.
The result leaves both teams with 2-1 records.

Mustangs stop the Bucks

After 69 points in its first two games, Sweetwater cranked its high-powered offense up yet another notch for Friday’s home opener against Breckenridge.
The Buckaroos managed to answer just about every score with one of their own, however, until a long kickoff return and a key defensive play in the fourth quarter helped Sweetwater finally put the game away.
With the 51-33 win — the Mustangs’ highest one-game output in nearly five years — Sweetwater is now 2-1 on the season, while Breckenridge fell to 1-2.

Sub-varsity squads defeat Breckenridge

Sweetwater won both of its games in sub-varsity football action on Thurs-day at Breckenridge. Both teams are back on the road this week at Wall.
Sweetwater JV 20, Breckenridge 7
Max Gomez threw touchdown passes of 24 yards to Sean Norman and 41 yards to Michael Green, and the JV (2-1) also got a 7-yard scoring run from Adrian Vizzerra in beating Breckenridge.
Other offensive standouts were running back Jacoby Hunt and receiver Mark Lawrence (6 catches, 84 yards), while Hunter Mobley (interception) and Vizzerra (three sacks) were among the defensive standouts.

Plowboys shut out in final non-district game

MILES — Roscoe failed to dent the scoreboard Friday night at Miles in its final non-district game, just one week after the Plowboys scored 45 points in an im-pressive home win. The result was a 19-0 loss that dropped Roscoe to 1-2 this season.
Miles (1-2), coming off a 44-12 loss to Quanah at Sweetwater’s Sammy Baugh Classic, held the Plowboys to 242 yards while scoring in each of the first three quarters as the Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season.

‘Friday Night Fight for the Cure’ set for Oct. 11

A list of business sponsorships is being gathered for the “Breast Cancer Friday Night Fight for the Cur”e to be held during the Sweetwater vs. Snyder volleyball and football games Oct. 11. Those who would like to have their business name displayed on the back of the shirts should contact Jill Locklar at (325) 320-4800 or Carla Lambert at (325) 338-1840 by Sept. 23. Also, persons may sponsor a loved one who has battled cancer by placing their name on the shirt. It can be either in honor of or in memory of the person.
