Six-man shootouts

September 16, 2013

Nolan County’s two six-man Hornet football teams kept the scoreboard very busy on Friday, but when the dust settled Blackwell was the only winner as Coach Clint Lowry’s team improved its record to 3-0.
Blackwell made the trip to Lingleville (2-1) and came back with an 88-42 victory.

‘Stangs, Bucks play at Bowl

September 12, 2013

Two teams headed in opposite directions. Tech-nically, that’s true for Sweet-water and Breckenridge, who bring matching 1-1 records to Mustang Bowl on Friday for Sweetwater’s home opener — and also the highlight game for this year’s ninth annual Sammy Baugh Classic.
The Mustangs won 39-31 at Andrews last week after allowing nearly 600 yards in a season-opening 46-30 loss to Eastland. Brecken-ridge, after winning 42-28 at Colorado City to start its season, was routed 48-3 by Vernon at home this past Friday to fall back to .500.

Highland hopes to change luck in home opener

September 12, 2013

Highland coach Jeff Shel-ton knew his team wouldn’t have an easy time this year with its tough non-district schedule, and the team’s 0-2 start bears it out.
But after losing on the road at both Motley County (59-62) and Sterling City (6-51), the Hornets will get a travel reprieve this Friday as they host Loraine.
And despite the fact that this week’s opponent is 2-0 and has won both games by the 45-point rule, Highland can look to last year’s team for motivation.
The Hornets also started 0-2 last year before beating Loraine, 46-44, to begin a five-game roll heading into district play.

Blackwell tries for 3rd straight win on the road

September 12, 2013

This was supposed to be the week that Blackwell fi-nally got a home game after a pair of road games to start the season.
However, the 2-0 Hornets will be making their longest road trip yet instead.Instead of hosting Rule, which called to cancel the teams’ game Tuesday, Blackwell will be going to Lingleville — which defeated Moran last week to match Blackwell’s 2-0 start to the season.

Roscoe back on road after 1st victory of Freeman era

September 12, 2013

After a Week Zero loss to De Leon, Roscoe gave new head coach Jake Freeman his first win this past Friday — and in the Plowboys’ home opener — with a 45-26 victory over Irion County.
The victory was “huge” for the program, Freeman said this week.
“Obviously, any win is big but to get rolling like we did on our home turf was big. It was great for the team to experience and to let them realize that they need to go out every week expecting to win.”
