November 4, 2013

ROSCOE — The Hamlin Pied Pipers proved to be a major roadblock to the Roscoe Plowboys’ playoff hopes here Friday as they dominated the scoreboard and came away with a 34-0 victory.
Hamlin, the district co-leader with Albany at 6-0, limited Roscoe to just 205 total yards as the Plowboys’ district record fell to 3-3.

Three local teams face tough challenges today

November 1, 2013

The three Nolan County high school football teams who are in action today all face tall assignments as they fight for a playoff berth.
Sweetwater (1-2), which is currently tied for fourth place in District 4-3A, goes to Monahans (3-0), which is the district’s only remaining undefeated team.
Sweetwater’s only win was at Greenwood (0-3), where the Mustangs won 54-29 before losing to Big Spring 65-42 last Friday.

Sweetwater, Fabens will play in Crane

November 1, 2013

Sweetwater and Fabens will meet in a Class 3A bi-district volleyball playoff at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Crane High School, according to Sweetwater head volleyball coach Liz Miller.
Sweetwater qualified for the playoffs as the fourth-place team in District 4-3A after Wednesday’s season-ending four-game win over Snyder at Mustang Gym.

Highland beaten by top-ranked Ira

November 1, 2013

HIGHLAND — Highland trailed No. 1-ranked Ira by just eight, 16-8, in the final minute of the first quarter when Michael Hyde scored on a 10-yard run and Jacob Richburg added the PAT on Thursday. But that proved to be all the scoring the Hornets could produce as they lost 54-8 to Ira.
Highland (1-1) will make the playoffs by beating Hermleigh next week. The Cardinals (0-1) will be playing today against Rotan, which is also 0-1. Highland (5-3) saw a five-game winning streak halted while Ira improved to 9-0, 2-0.

SW seeks win at Monahans

October 31, 2013

Sweetwater will make the three-hour trip to Monahans on Friday seeking a win — a win that would not only greatly improve its chances of making the postseason, but also be a huge boost to the football program.
The Mustangs (1-2 district, 3-5) will face a Loboes team that sits atop the 4-3A race with a perfect 3-o mark — but needed a big fourth-quarter rally to win 35-34 over Snyder last week.
Snyder, which fell to 1-2 in district, held a 34-21 lead with 7:41 to play after a 100-yard interception return.

Highland tests win streak vs. top-ranked Ira

October 31, 2013

Talk about a tough as-signment. Highland takes on the state’s No. 1-ranked team in Six-Man Division I tonight at 7:30 p.m.
But Ira (8-0) isn’t the only team in Highland’s district with a long winning streak. The Hornets (5-3) have won five straight since an inaus-picious 0-3 start. In that time, Highland has defeated Sands, Trent, Lueders-Avoca, Blackwell and Rotan and risen to No. 16 in D-I. The Hornets need only one win in their last two games to make the Six-Man playoffs, which would end a postseason drought dating to 2009 when Highland advanced to the state finals in Division II.

Blackwell will face Rob. Lee for district title

October 31, 2013

Blackwell’s football team has something in common with the government. Both have been experienced a recent shutdown.
Blackwell (6-1) has been idle the past two weeks after losing its final non-district game, 76-60, to Highland on Oct. 11.
At the time, the Hornets thought their six-game win-ning streak was the only thing ending. But in addition to a scheduled open date Oct. 18, they discovered two of the other three teams in their district (8 Six-Man) — Lohn and Panther Creek — had cancelled the rest of their season and all three of their district games, due to a lack of players.

Roscoe to host 7-1A co-leader Hamlin

October 31, 2013

With a 4-4 record, Roscoe has already doubled its win total from last season.
But an even bigger goal — making the playoffs — is still in sight for coach Jake Freeman’s team. And right now, the Plowboys are on a two-game roll with wins over Ranger (46-36) and Gorman (71-8) that have put them in a three-way tie for third place with Cross Plains and Roby. All three are 3-2 in District 7-1A, Div. II with two games left.
