LUBBOCK â Sweetwater got the first hit in Fridayâs Region I-3A area softball playoff game with Pampa on a one-out single by Mor-gan Gomez in the bottom of the first inning.
But it took the Lady Mus-tangs another five innings to get their second hit, and by then Pampa was firmly in control as the Lady Har-vesters ended Sweetwaterâs year with a 5-0 victory.
CRANE â Despite some missed opportunities, the Sweetwater baseball team got its first playoff series in nine years off to a success-ful start Friday.
But the Mustangsâ 5-4 bi-district win over Fabens in Game 1 of their best-of-3 series was suspenseful right down to the end.
Sweetwater stranded 10 runners in the contest, nine of them in the last four in-nings, but still was able to rally from a brief 3-2 defi-cit â and guarantee itself two chances Saturday at Crane High Schoolâs field to advance to the Class 3A area playoffs next week.
Listed below are the regional times and distances of the Nolan County athletes who qualified for the state track meet and where they rank among the nine state qualifiers in their events. The state track meet will be held May 10-11 at Austinâs Mike A. Myers Stadium:

Being the coach of the first Sweetwater High School softball team to win a play-off game may make him the answer to a trivia question some day.
However, Tony Heredia is doing his best to put the Lady Mustangsâ 11-1 win over Pecos in the past and get his team ready to face a tough Pampa team in the Region I-3A area playoffs at 6 p.m. today at Lubbockâs Coronado High School.
âWe really havenât even talked about it,â he said. âWeâre proud of the fact we won a bi-district championship, but now weâre ready for the next challenge.â
The first playoff trip for Sweetwater High Schoolâs baseball squad since 2004 is lengthy as the team goes to Crane High School to play Fabens in a best-of-3 bi-district series. Game 1 starts at 5 p.m. today, with Game 2 at 2 p.m. Saturday. Game 3, if necessary, gets started 30 minutes after the end of the second game.
It was a long road just to get here. After narrowly missing the playoffs a year ago, Sweetwater (15-13) was the district co-champion this season in 4-3A, where a single game separated the districtâs top four teams.

WOLFFORTH â Sweet-waterâs 2013 softball team just keeps rewriting history.
The Lady Mustangs (21-13) â who were already the first softball team in the 17-year history of Sweet-waterâs program to record 20 wins â added another historical footnote Saturday when they routed Pecos, 11-1, in five innings for their first playoff win ever.
âWe wanted it pretty bad,â said senior pitcher Maty Montgomery, who allowed just four hits and struck out three to get the victory. âIt feels good.â
LUBBOCK â The third time for Nick Nemir might be the charm.
The Sweetwater High School senior, who competed in three events this weekend at the Region I-3A track meet at Texas Tech University, will find out later today if his third-place showing Saturday in the boys 300-meter hurdles is good enough to earn him a ticket to Austin for the state meet May 10-11.
SAN ANGELO â Many of the Highland girls who went to Austin two months ago for the Lady Hornet basketball teamâs first-ever state tournament appearance are going back to represent their school at the state track meet.
Also making the trip wil be two Highland boys and a pair of Blackwell athletes â one girl and one boy. In all, the two schools captured eight medals â representing the work of five individual athletes and one relay â at the Region II-1A, Division II meet held this past weekend at Angelo State University.
