GRAPE CREEK — The Sweetwater High School volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 road win at Grape Creek on Monday.
After splitting the first two games of the match, Sweetwater — which has just two returning lettermen — took charge by beating Grape Creek 25-17 and 25-9 to claim the win.
After being a perennial playoff team for three decades, Roscoe has gone just 6-25 over the last three seasons.
But with the hiring of new head coach Jake Freeman and offensive coordinator Greg Althof — plus a sharp increase in the number of athletes who showed up for workouts last week — the Plowboys hope their recent woes will soon become a distant memory.
It’s been five long years since Sweetwater fielded a playoff team.
Put another way, none of the current Mustangs were in high school the last time it happened in 2008.
Reserved season football tickets for the 2013 season are up for renewal to current option holders and may be purchased during regular business hours at the Sweetwater ISD administration office through Fri-day, Aug. 30. Reserved ticket sales for the general public go on sale Monday, Sept. 2 through Friday, Sept. 13, also during regular business hours at the Sweetwater ISD administration office. Former Sweetwater High School athlete Joe Banyard saw NFL action for the first time this season Friday with the Minnesota Vikings in the team’s preseason opener with the Houston Texans.
Banyard, a 24-year-old running back, had eight yards on four carries and also caught a 4-yard pass in the game, which the Vikings lost 27-13. He is trying to make the team’s 53-player roster this year after ending last season on the Vikings’ practice squad.
With no starters and only two lettermen — seniors Kayla Chowning and Mikki Reschman — coming back following a 24-win season, Sweetwater High School’s volleyball team will enter the 2013 campaign in full rebuilding mode.
Aly Heredia, Shaneese Brown, Lena Lovelady, Zig-gy Collins, Maddie Jones, Mikealah Foust, Morgan Gomez and either Kensi Chowning or Maddie Berry are the other members of the varsity squad, which starts its season with a 6:15 p.m. match Monday at San Angelo Grape Creek before a dual match at home with Water Valley and Seminole on the following day.
Jake Freeman, left, is shown talking to some of his players during a workout at the Roscoe High School field today.
Freeman became Roscoe’s head coach this summer after serving as an assistant at Sweetwater for many years.
Freeman, a 1997 Roscoe High School graduate, was a star player there during the mid-1990s and later played collegiately at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene before starting his coaching career.
Two of Sweetwater’s football players are shown with head coach Shane Mobley during an offensive drill that was held this morning at Mustang Bowl as practices began for the 2013 season.
Players begin full contact drills in pads starting Friday.
Sweetwater High School begins football practices for the 2013 season Monday at its practice field starting at 7 a.m. All players will work out in shorts until Friday, the first day pads and full contact is permitted.
Sweetwater’s first scrimmage will be held Aug. 16 at Wichita Falls Hirschi, followed by the team’s final scrimmage Thursday, Aug. 22 vs. San Angelo Lake View at Mustang Bowl.
Sweetwater High School volleyball practices at the SHS gym begin Monday, just one week before the season opens with a match at Grape Creek on Aug. 12. There are just three home matches — Aug. 15 vs. Abilene Cooper, Sept. 10 vs. Lamesa and Sept. 24 vs. Levelland — before district play starts Sept. 28 at Monahans.
