All-star teams begin play at district tourneys

Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-olds won their game in dra-matic fashion, but the other three local all-star teams all fell short in District 5 Little League All-Star tournament action on Tuesday.
Snyder led the 10-11 year-olds 1-0 entering the sixth inning, but Sweetwater won it 3-1 on a 3-run, walk-off homer by Rylen Moncada in their first of four District 5 pool play games. Sweetwa-ter plays again Thursday vs. Wylie at 8 p.m. at Wylie.
But Sweetwater’s 9-10, 11-12 (Little League) and 13-14 (Junior League) all-star teams all went down to defeat Tuesday in their pool play games.

Baseball team honored with SISD resolution

The Sweetwater High School baseball team was recently honored with a resolution by the Sweetwater ISD for making the playoffs. Several members of the team were present at last week’s school board meeting and were presented individual resolutions.

Tennis camp mini champs

Josh Browning and Gisela Solano (shown) were Group A mini champs at the Building a Mustang Tennis Camp at Sweetwater Middle School.
Deztene Sweek and Tres Ortega were Group B mini champs at the Building a Mustang Tennis Camp at Sweetwater Middle School.

Softball team honored with SISD resolution

The Sweetwater High School softball team was recently honored with a resolution by the Sweetwater ISD for making the playoffs.

Sweetwater High School players Rhett Torres, Michael Hunt, Kaleb Hoover, Isaiah McGee and Dylan Bennett (from left) attended the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches “Camp of Champs” at Southwestern University in Georgetown recently.
During the TABC camp, they teamed up with five players from Hereford High School to form “Sweet-Herd” in a tournament where they finished as runnerups after compiling a 9-4 record.

All-stars start play at district tournaments

Sweetwater will have four Little League all-star baseball teams competing in District 5 tournaments that begin today and continue through July 5.
Sweetwater’s 9-10 year-old Little League all-stars are Harrison Foster, Logan Cornutt, Hector Medina, Cooper Hrbacek, Ricky Dela-paz, Jacob Roden, Jonathan Gallegos, Ector Martinez Jr., Braxton Gomez, Ethan Cortez, Skyler Painter and Jacob Cantu. Rodney Foster will serve as manager of the team with Ray Cornutt and Andrew Medina serving as assistant coaches.

Shown are some of the students who attended Mustang Baseball Camps last week at Sportsman’s Park which were open to all students entering grades 1-9.
This year’s camps were led by Sweetwater High School baseball coaches Roland Herrera, Tony Cortez and Chad Copeland.
All of the students were taught baseball fundamentals and had pictures taken on the final day of the camp with their T-shirts. Herrera, Cortez and Copeland are pictured on the back row. The student campers who attended this year included the following:

All-Big Country baseball

Sweetwater, led by pitcher James Clift, had nine players earn All-Big Country baseball recognition from the Abilene Reporter-News.
Clift was one of 10 pitch-ers on the All-Big Country team, which included five starters and five, including Clift, in the “bullpen.”

Led by Kelsi Crosson, who was named to the team as a reserve outfielder, a total of five Sweetwater players received All-Big Country softball recognition from the Abilene Reporter-News.
Crosson, a four-sport athlete who will play volleyball next year at Cisco Junior College, was named one of three reserve outfielders after batting .444 with 10 doubles and three home runs for the Lady Mustangs, who won their first playoff game in school history this season after finishing as District 4-3A runnerup. She also had 28 RBIs, scored 27 runs and stole 11 bases.
