Regional berths will be sought today by 15 Sweet-water High School athletes — nine girls and six boys — who are competing in the area track meet at Pecos.
Their goals are to secure a top-four finish and advance to the Region I-3A meet set for April 26-27 in Lubbock.
The boys will be led by Nick Nemir, who has qualified to compete in four events for the Mustangs — the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, long jump and as a member of the 400-meter relay — and is trying for his third straight trip to the regional meet.
Having successful baseball and softball teams at Sweetwater High School is something people here haven’t been accustomed to seeing on a regular basis.
In fact, having both teams in the playoffs the same year has never happened. That’s why the past week at SHS has been, well ... historic.
Dating back to 1996, the first year Sweetwater played softball, each of the teams had been to the playoffs on three occasions — but never in the same year.
For most of that 17-year period, the losses — especially against district competition — have far outnumbered the wins.
MONAHANS — For the first time since 2004, Sweetwater’s baseball team is in the Class 3A playoffs.
But wait, there’s more.
After Tuesday’s 10-5 win at Monahans — coupled with Snyder’s 7-4 victory over Wylie — the Mustangs find themselves all alone atop District 4-3A.
But it took a late rally for Sweetwater (7-1) to defeat Monahans, which had taken a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth and was just three outs from an upset victory.

MONAHANS — Sweet-water’s softball team came into Monahans on Friday having clinched a playoff berth, but still with a chance to claim at least a share of the District 4-3A title.
And after rallying from an early four-run deficit to tie the game at 4-4, the Lady Mustangs’ dream was still alive. But missed opportunities to take the lead led to a disappointing finish, as Monahans scored the winning run in the seventh inning on a walk-off single to claim a 5-4 victory.

Here are Blackwell individual results from the District 14-1A track meet which it also hosted this past Thursday:
Sweetwater High School’s baseball team last made the playoffs in 2004. With a win tonight at Monahans — or a Snyder loss to district co-leader Wylie — the Mus-tangs will clinch a berth.
Sweetwater (6-1 district, 14-11 overall) is currently tied with Wylie for the district lead with three games left. The Mustangs have won their last three contests heading into today’s game at Monahans (1-6) since losing to Wylie on March 28, and also won its first game with Monahans 11-1 on March 26 in Sweetwater. Wylie and Sweetwater are two games ahead of Big Spring (4-3), with Snyder sitting at 3-4.
Sweetwater High School’s junior varsity boys track team scored 145 points at last week’s district meet to finish just two points out of first place. Individual winners were Deshaun Williams in the long jump, Marquees Jenkins in the 200, Mark Lawrence in the 800, Max Nemir in the 300 hurdles and Kaegan Jeffrey in the discus. Lawrence, Nemir, Jenkins and Max Gomez ran on the first-place 400 relay and Williams, Jenkins, Gomez and Austin Kamer on the 800 relay, while Jenkins, Gomez, Williams and Nemir were on the 400 relay that placed second.
