SMS teams claim titles

The seventh grade and eighth grade Red girls teams both won championships at Sweetwater Middle School’s girls basketball tournament this past weekend.

Highland girls still No. 1

The Highland girls basketball team is still No. 1 in Class 1A, Division II in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches’ initial regular-season poll that was released Monday.

Plowgirls rally to win

ROSCOE — A late rally pushed Roscoe past Winters, 31-27, in girls basketball ac-tion Tuesday. The Plowgirls trailed by one until winning the fourth period 12-7.
Roscoe (2-2) led 8-7 after one quarter but Winters led 18-14 at halftime and 20-19 after three periods.
Roscoe was paced by Eva Aguayo with 10 points. Ashton Payne added eight points, Shelby Brown sev-en, Olivia Saddler three, Whitney Williams two and Selena Perez one to the win-ning cause.
Roscoe’s JV girls lost 51-17 to Stamford’s JV.

Blackwell, G-R to play in Rankin

It’s been 17 years since a Blackwell football team got past the first round of the Six-Man playoffs. But it took less than 24 hours af-ter the Hornets’ 70-26 win over Lueders-Avoca this past Friday to find out who they would play in the regional round this week.
According to Blackwell coach Clint Lowry, his team will play Grandfalls-Royalty at 7 p.m. Friday in Rankin. Grandfalls-Royalty will be considered the home team for the contest.
Both teams come into the game ranked in the top 10 in Six-Man Division II.

Sweetwater 8th grade ‘B’ and ‘A’ girls host Midland Greenwood at 5 and 6:15 p.m., respectively.
Sweetwater 7th grade ‘A’ and ‘B’ boys play at Midland Greenwood (season openers) at 5 and 6:15 p.m., re-spectively.
Sweetwater 8th grade ‘B’ and ‘A’ boys play at Midland Greenwood (season openers) at 5 and 6:15 p.m., respectively.
Roscoe junior high ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams play at Westbrook starting at 5 p.m.
Highland junior high teams will play at Ira starting at 6 p.m.

Hornets run over Raiders

WESTBROOK — It took Blackwell a little while to work out the kinks Friday when it faced Lueders-Avoca in a Six-Man, Division II bi-district playoff.
But then that wasn’t too surprising, since it was only the Hornets’ second game since Oct. 11.
Once the machine start-ed running smoothly, how-ever, it became unstoppa-ble as Blackwell overcame a slow start for a 70-26 win.

Highland girls stay unbeaten with win

SANDS — The Highland girls basketball team, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, Division II by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, improved its season record to 4-0 on Friday with a 64-49 win over Smyer.
Five different players — Beth Richburg (12), Sierra Allen (11), Madison Moseley (11), Hannah Allen (10) and Sydny Helbert (10) — scored in double figures for the Lady Hornets, whose four wins have all been by at least 11 points. Schyler Kimbrell had eight points and Kay-lee Martin two.

Blackwell to open playoffs vs. L-A today

Blackwell has a chance to do something today when it faces Lueders-Avoca in the Six-Man Division II playoffs that it hasn’t done since the 1990s — come away with a victory in the postseason.
They get another chance to do that at 7:30 p.m. in Westbrook. And the Horn-ets (9-1) — who have played an actual game only once in the past month — will prob-ably be chomping at the bit to face Lueders-Avoca (7-3) in bi-district.

Roscoe girls get 1st win of year at R-Lee

The Roscoe girls bas-ketball team picked up its first win of the sea-son with a 52-38 victory at Robert Lee on Tuesday. The Plowgirls will host Winters today.
Eva Aguayo led Ros-coe’s win with 21 points while Samantha Ortega chipped in with 10. Also scoring were Olivia Sad-dler and Whitney Wil-liams with five, Ashton Payne with three and Shelby Brown, Danielle Dean, Mia Herrera and Selena Perez with two. Roscoe led 14-4, 33-12 and 41-21 at the quarter breaks.
