Cisco, Stanton have playoff at Bowl

Sweetwater hosts a Class 2A, Division II playoff be-tween Cisco and Stanton today at Mustang Bowl. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
Cisco (10-0) comes in with a No. 5 state ranking in Class 2A while Stanton (6-4) was unranked at the end of the regular season.
Three teams from District 4-3A have playoffs set for today. In Division I, Wylie (7-3) plays Fort Stockton at 7:30 p.m. in Big Spring, while Big Spring (7-3) meets Fabens at 7 p.m. in Pecos.
In Division II, Snyder (3-7) plays Clint at 7:30 p.m. in Kermit. On Thursday, Monahans (7-3) advanced by beating Pecos 35-13.

Loraine shuts out Rob. Lee at B’well

Loraine advanced to the area round of the Six-Man Division II playoffs Thurs-day with a 52-0 shutout win over Robert Lee.
The Bulldogs, who came in ranked No. 7 in Six-Man, Division II, needed just two quarters to finish off Rob-ert Lee at Blackwell’s Hor-net Field, as the game ended by the 45-point mercy rule. Robert Lee finished its season at 4-5.

Highland’s Allen will play basketball at ACU

Her father Brent went to Abilene Christian University on an athletic scholarship. So did mother Michelle.
And Wednesday, High-land’s Sierra Allen did her part to make sure that her family tradition would continue when she signed a letter of intent to continue her basketball career at ACU.
“It’s kind of like a dream come true for me,” the 6-0 senior said after a ceremony to announce her signing was held at Highland’s gym.
“I’ve been going to basketball camp (at ACU) since I was real young. For this to happen, it’s unbelievable.”

Highland girls are now 3-0

The Highland girls bas-ketball team is now 3-0 this season following a 50-27 win over Aspermont on Tuesday.
Highland, ranked No. 1 in Class 1A, Division II by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, led 18-2 after one quarter and was up by double digits the rest of the game. Sierra Allen led the Lady Hornets with 15 points. Hannah Allen (11) was also in double figures while Madison Moseley and Beth Richburg had seven, Schyler Kimbrell and Kay-lee Martin four and Sydny Helbert two.

Blackwell to host playoff

Robert Lee and Loraine meet in a Six-Man, Division II bi-district playoff today in Blackwell at 7:30 p.m.
For Robert Lee, it will be the team’s second trip to Blackwell this month.
Back on Nov. 1, the Steers (4-4) made their first trip to Blackwell and lost to the Hornets, 84-56, in what es-sentially was the champion-ship game for District 8, Division II.
Loraine (9-1) is also familiar with playoffs involving Blackwell. Last year, the teams met in Hermleigh in bi-district with Loraine winning 49-22. Loraine is ranked No. 7 in the state in Division II Six-Man.

Mustang Football Player of the Week

Ty Davis, a senior linebacker, has been named the final Sweetwater Football Player of the Week for the 2013 season.
He had three solo tackles, assisted on seven others and also hurried two passes in the Mustangs’ season-ending 42-28 loss to Wylie.
Davis is one of 23 Sweetwater seniors who suited up for the final time this past Friday.

SW drops close one

The Sweetwater girls bas-ketball team stayed close, but couldn’t quite get over the hump in a 43-42 loss to Wichita Falls Hirschi here on Tuesday.
The Lady Mustangs (1-2) led only once in the second half, but pulled within a point twice in the final minute — first on a 3-pointer by Hayley Brownlow that made it 41-40 with 33.8 seconds left, and then on a putback by Cierra Knox with 8.2 remaining after Hirschi had made two free throws at the other end.
Hirschi called timeout with 5.7 seconds left, and was able to break Sweetwater’s fullc0urt press and hang on for the one-point win.

SMS splits final games against Wylie

Sweetwater went 2-for-4 in season-ending middle school football games last Thursday against Wylie, getting victories from both of its Red teams.
7th grade Red 28, Wylie 22
The teams battled back and forth until Sweetwater’s seventh grade Red team took the lead in the fourth quarter and made a defensive stop to seal the win. Carson Brownlow had three touchdowns on runs of 20, 5 and 10 yards; Andrew Medina had a 45-yard interception return for a TD; and Medina and Alex Gallegos had two-point runs.

Freshman girls win; JV girls fall

The Sweetwater freshman girls basketball team, paced by Lauren Jones’ 18 points, beat Wichita Falls Hirschi’s freshman girls 28-16 here on Tuesday as they ran their early season record to 2-0.
Sweetwater led all the way, going up 10-6 after one quarter and extending its lead to 16-9 at halftime. The Lady Mustangs led 24-14 going into the fourth quarter.
Jennifer Medellin (four) and Sonya Sanchez, Davina Walker and Kaitlyn Foster (two each) also scored.

SMS teams top B-Spring

The Sweetwater eighth grade Red girls edged Big Spring 43-42 in two over-times, while the Sweetwater seventh grade White girls defeated Big Spring 30-8 in season-opening basketball action on Monday.
Texas Williams had 20 points and Sonora Medellin 17 for Sweetwater Red. Williams also grabbed eight rebounds, while Eva Orne-las had five and Jessica Poe four. Angela Blueford scored three points and Lati Burnett, Sierra Martinez and Jaelynn Page one.
