Sweetwater High School’s baseball team last made the playoffs in 2004. With a win tonight at Monahans — or a Snyder loss to district co-leader Wylie — the Mus-tangs will clinch a berth.
Sweetwater (6-1 district, 14-11 overall) is currently tied with Wylie for the district lead with three games left. The Mustangs have won their last three contests heading into today’s game at Monahans (1-6) since losing to Wylie on March 28, and also won its first game with Monahans 11-1 on March 26 in Sweetwater. Wylie and Sweetwater are two games ahead of Big Spring (4-3), with Snyder sitting at 3-4.
Sweetwater High School’s junior varsity boys track team scored 145 points at last week’s district meet to finish just two points out of first place. Individual winners were Deshaun Williams in the long jump, Marquees Jenkins in the 200, Mark Lawrence in the 800, Max Nemir in the 300 hurdles and Kaegan Jeffrey in the discus. Lawrence, Nemir, Jenkins and Max Gomez ran on the first-place 400 relay and Williams, Jenkins, Gomez and Austin Kamer on the 800 relay, while Jenkins, Gomez, Williams and Nemir were on the 400 relay that placed second.
Sweetwater High School will be sending several athletes to Pecos this Friday for the area track meet, with the top four in each event advancing to the regional meet in Lubbock.
Sweetwater senior Nick Nemir will be in four events — the long jump, 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and the 400-meter relay.
Nemir was third in the first three events at the district meet and the relay he ran on placed fourth. A story in last Friday’s paper incorrectly said that Nemir placed fifth in the long jump and would not advance to the area meet in that event.

Greg Aiken of Sweetwater takes a lead off first base after his fourth-inning single Friday against Big Spring. Aiken’s hit started a five-run inning that rallied the Mustangs from a 3-1 deficit to an 8-4 win which kept Sweetwater tied for first place in District 4-3A with Wylie. The Mustangs will play at Monahans on Tuesday.

It took 15 years before Sweetwater’s softball program finally got back into the playoffs in 2012.
On Friday, the Lady Mus-tangs claimed their second straight postseason berth with a 6-5 win over Big Spring in a game players on both teams may remember 15 years from now.
Sweetwater jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings, only to see the visiting Lady Steers battle back and tie it 5-5 by scoring twice in the top of the seventh.
The Sweetwater baseball team is so close to its first playoff berth in nine years that the Mustang players can taste it. But despite a come-from-behind 8-4 win here Friday over Big Spring, they will have to wait at least four more days to celebrate their accomplishment.
However, Sweetwater (6-1 district, 14-11 overall) is still tied with Wylie for first place with three games left, and this Saturday’s game in Sweetwater between the two teams could decide the eventual 4-3A champion.
