SW, Roscoe need W tonight

November 8, 2013

One Nolan County team — Blackwell — has already qualified for the state football playoffs that get started next week. But that number could triple when the dust has finally settled tonight in both Sweetwater and Roby.
Sweetwater, which is 2-2 in District 4-3A and 4-5 overall, will host Wylie (3-1, 6-3) at Mustang Bowl in what is likely a must-win situation for Coach Shane Mobley’s Mustangs.

Highland falls just short in final game

November 8, 2013

HIGHLAND — Thursday night’s final regular-season football game between Highland and Hermleigh was about what you’d expect for two teams with identical season and district records fighting for the No. 2 playoff spot in District 7 Six-Man.
There were four lead changes, two in each half, before Hermleigh finally emerged with a 39-38 win to take the No. 2 berth and end Highland’s season.

SW faces do-or-die vs. Wylie

November 7, 2013

There will be a definite sense of finality on Friday when Sweetwater and Wylie meet at Mustang Bowl.
It’s the final game of the regular season for both of the teams, but the finality goes further. Consider:
(1) If Sweetwater loses, the Mustangs’ season will be over unless Snyder (1-3 in district) also loses to Midland Greenwood (0-4). If Snyder wins and the Mustangs (2-2) lose to Wylie, Snyder will take the No. 4 — and final — playoff spot in District 4-3A by vir-tue of the Tigers’ 41-14 win over Sweetwater.

Roscoe needs a win at Roby

November 7, 2013

The Roscoe football team enters Friday’s final game of the season at Roby with, as head coach Jake Freeman puts it, “something to play for” — namely, making the Class 1A playoffs for the first time in three years.
To end their postseason drought, the Plowboys will have to do more than just pick up a win. They have to win by 15 or more, Freeman said.
Currently, Roby (4-2) has a one-game lead for the third and final playoff spot in District 7-1A, Division II over both Roscoe and Cross Plains, who are 3-3.

Hornets can get No. 2 spot

November 7, 2013

Highland saw its hopes of a district title end with a 54-8 loss to top-ranked Ira last week.
But it didn’t end its hopes to grab the No. 2 playoff spot — something Highland will clinch by defeating Hermleigh when the teams meet today in Highland in the regular season finale.
Highland (5-4, 1-1) had its five-game win streak halted by Ira (9-0, 2-0), which with the victory assured itself of going into next week’s six-man playoffs as the top seed in District 7, Division I.
If Highland should defeat Hermleigh (5-4, 1-1), how-ever, the Hornets will join Ira in the postseason.

The Lady Mustangs — who made the playoffs despite fielding one of their most inexperienced teams in several years — were defeated in three games in the match at Crane High School.

SW fades away after strong start

November 6, 2013

CRANE — Sweetwater’s first volleyball playoff game in five years started well for the Lady Mustangs, who held several comfortable leads in the opening game of Tuesday’s bi-district matchup with Fabens.
However, the Lady Wild-cats suddenly came alive with a 9-0 run that turned an 18-13 Sweetwater lead into a 22-18 deficit. Fabens won, 25-22, and went on to complete a three-game sweep after winning the last two games by scores of 25-19 and 25-13 at Crane High School’s gym.
