SW will begin play at 7-on-7 state tournament Thursday

Several Sweetwater High School football players will be spending Thursday and Friday in College Station making history — as part of the school’s first-ever group to play in the state 7-on-7 tournament.
Sweetwater qualified with a top-two finish last month at Stephenville’s state qualifying tournament.

James Clift, a 2014 grad-uate of Sweetwater High School and former SHS athlete, has been named by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Associ-ation to its Class 3A academic all-state team.
The honor is given to high school seniors who main-tained an overall grade-point average of 93 or above for their four years of high school, and who were members in good standing of their team at the time of nomination and of good moral character.
Clift was the only baseball player in Sweet-water’s district (4-3A) to receive THSBCA academic all-state honors.

A Mustang Golf Camp was held this past week at Sweetwater Country Club for ages 5 and up.

Junior Leaguers are eliminated as Wylie rallies for 4-2 victory

The Junior League all-stars from Sweetwater must have felt like it was deja vu all over again at the end of their District 5 losers bracket game against Wylie on Wednesday.
For the second straight game, and second time in three days, Sweetwater was three outs away from a win that would have put them in the District 5 title game.
But those dreams were dashed for a second straight time Wednesday as Wylie, trailing 2-1 entering the top of the seventh, pushed over three runs in its final at bat and held off Sweetwater in the bottom of the frame to leave with a 4-2 victory.

SW gets another shot at title today vs. Wylie

Wylie will be Sweetwater’s opponent in today’s 7 p.m. Junior League (ages 13-14) losers bracket final played at Wylie’s Kirby Park.
The winner of today’s contest plays for the title at the same location Thursday, also beginning at 7 p.m., against Abilene South — which beat Sweetwater 6-5 to reach the title game when the teams met in the semi-finals on Monday.

Sweetwater will be taking on three other teams in its pool when it plays July 10-11 at the Division II state 7-on-7 championships at College Station, which has a 64-team field.

All-star disappointment for local teams in Abilene

After a disappointing day that saw all three local teams in action lose on Monday, Sweetwater’s Junior League (ages 13-14) all-stars are suddenly the only survivor in District 5 Little League tournament baseball action in Abilene.

Andrew Melendez of the Junior Leaguers (ages 13-14, shown), Leo Holsey of the 9-10 year-olds and Antonio Heredia of the 11-12 year-olds were among Sweetwater’s pitchers this past weekend at various District 5 Little League all-star tournament games being played in the Abilene area.

SW’s Aiken commits to War Hawks

Greg Aiken won’t be goi-ng far from home when he continues his baseball car-eer in college.
Aiken, a four-year starter at first base for Sweetwater who was the district MVP in his senior year, committed to play for McMurry University in Abilene after playing in a high school all-star game in Round Rock. There, he helped the North to an 8-1 win over the South all-stars at Dell Diamond, which also was home to the state high school baseball tournament in May.

Junior golf clinic set this week at Sweetwater CC

A Mustang Junior Golf Clinic will be held Tuesday through Thursday, July 1-3, at Sweetwater Country Club for ages 5 and up. Sessions are from 9-11 a.m. daily. The cost is $60 per child, but family discounts will be available.
