After reaching the title game of the Silver Bracket at Big Spring’s Crossroads tournament, Sweetwater’s softball lost to Lamesa 6-5 in five innings on Saturday for a second-place finish.
The offense was led by Abby Garcia, who had two hits including a home run and scored twice; and Kat Montoya, who hit a two-run double. Morgan Gomez also doubled and Savanna Hall, Lauren Jones and Shaneese Brown also hit safely for the Lady Mustangs, who out-hit Lamesa 7-5 but saw their record fall to 8-6. Mustangs 4-0 at WBC

March 3, 2014

Although Sweetwater was the host team for the Wes Bishop Wood Bat Classic at Sportsman’s Park, the Mus-tangs weren’t very generous to their opponents.
After opening their three-day event with a 4-0 win over Pampa on Thursday, Sweetwater (7-3) picked up three more wins over the weekend with a reliable combination of great pitching, timely hits and solid defense to finish with a 4-0 Classic record on Saturday.

End of the road • Trojans speed past taller Highland for 53-45 victory

March 2, 2014

AUSTIN — The Highland girls basketball team knew what it was up against on Friday when it faced a Calvert squad whose considerable speed and ability to create turnovers with its wall-to-wall defensive pressure compensated for a big size disadvantage against the Lady Hornets.
What Highland could not have expected, however, was the kind of shooting performance delivered by Calvert’s Jaylonn Walker.

Clift no-hits Pampa in WBC opener

February 28, 2014

It doesn’t take many runs to give James Clift a comfortable lead when he pitches against Pampa.
He needed just one when he threw the opening game for Sweetwater’s baseball team Thursday at its newly named Wes Bishop Wood Bat Classic at Sportsman’s Park. But Clift got four runs while pitching a no-hitter against Pampa, the first of his varsity career.
Clift is now 3-0 over Pampa in the past year. This was his second straight shutout since last March when he pitched Sweetwater to a 6-2 win over Pampa at the 2013 Wood Bat Classic.

Wes Bishop Wood Bat Classic Schedule

February 27, 2014

Here is the schedule for the Wes Bishop Wood Bat Classic baseball tournament being held at Sportsman Park through Saturday, March 1.
Due to a mixup, the wrong tournament schedule was printed in today's Reporter sports section and we regret the error.
Sweetwater's first game will be played at 6:30 p.m. today against Pampa. The tournament was renamed this year to honor Wes Bishop, the former longtime director of physical therapy at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital and an avid supporter of youth sports in Sweetwater, who died this past October.
