ABILENE â€” For a half, the Sweetwater girls were competitive against No. 18-ranked Wylie on Friday on the Lady Bulldogsâ€™ home floor, trailing by just seven (26-19) as they went to the dressing room.
At that point, the Lady Mustangsâ€™ dream of pulling into a first-place tie with Wylie â€” which actually led by just four points, 23-19, until hitting a 3-pointer just before halftime â€” in District 4-3A seemed possible.
The Highland and Roscoe girls were big winners on the court in District 13-A, Division II basketball action Friday as they won by 54 and 49 points, respectively, against outmatched foes.
The Highland and Roscoe boys, however, lost games by a total of seven points.
Just how dominant have the Highland girls been in district play so far? The Lady Hornets ended the first half of the schedule Friday with an average winning margin of more than 41 points.

Going a collective 4-2 in district play after totalling just two wins a year ago is a good start. And todayâ€™s games at Abilene Wylie will provide yet another barometer for just how much Sweetwaterâ€™s varsity basketball teams have improved this season.
Sweetwaterâ€™s girls (3-1 in district) will tie Wylie (4-0) for the lead in District 4-3A if they can upset the Lady Bulldogs, the two-time defending state champions and currently ranked No. 18 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll.
Sweetwater beat Snyder 56-45 Tuesday, while Wylie defeated Greenwood (3-1) 69-43 in its last outing.
The Sweetwater junior varsity girls basketball team has a perfect 18-0 record overall and is 4-0 in District 4-3A play entering todayâ€™s 5 p.m. game at Abilene Wylie.
The team includes, front row from left, Maddie Jones, Lexi Castillo and Jasmine Reddic; middle row, Abby McPherson, Jaya Atkins, Nisha Williams, Gabby Reyes and Cierra Knox; and top row, coach Amy Clark, Bianca Castillo, Shaneese Brown, Morgan Whitley and manager Holly Johnson.
Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s sub-varsity teams went 2-2 when they played at Snyder on Tuesday, with both girls teams winning.
Sweetwaterâ€™s JV girls are now 18-0 overall (4-0 district) after winning 41-27.
Cierra Knox had 12 points while Abby McPherson ad-ded nine points, Maddie Jones eight, Bianca Castillo and Shaneese Brown four and Gabby Reyes and Mor-gan Whitley two apiece for the Lady Mustangs.
Sweetwaterâ€™s freshman girls also won, 32-15, as they improved their records to 10-5 overall and 3-1 in district play.

The Blackwell girls bask-etball team got its first win in District 14-A, Division II play Tuesday by defeating Veribest 35-25. Stephanie Metcalf had 11 points while Brooklyn Harris had eight, Bethany Breaux and Hailey Bennett seven and Eliza-beth Rozzlle two for the Lady Hornets, who are 1-7 in district and 2-15 overall.
Blackwell led by just two points, 21-19, until outscor-ing Veribest 14-6 in the fourth quarter as it avenged a district-opening loss when the teams played Dec. 11.
