Sweetwater LL teams wrapping up season at District 5 tournaments

Sweetwater Little League had a total of nine teams playing at single-elimination District 5 tournaments that got under way Saturday at Abilene, Clyde or Snyder with four age divisions.
Sweetwater will be repre-sented by three teams each in Minor League (ages 9-10) and Major League (ages 11-12), plus two Junior League teams (ages 13-14) and one Senior League team (ages 15-16). All of the teams will be trying to reach the district championship games that will be played later this week to end the regular season, with all-star action still to come.

Mustang baseball team is honored by SISD

Members of the area finalist Sweetwater High School baseball team were recently presented with resolutions by the Sweetwater ISD.

Sweetwater FCA all-star participants

Seven graduating Sweetwater High School athletes will participate next month in an all-star sports festival that will have games in three area cities. The event, known as the Big Country Chevy Dealers FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) All-Star Festival, will be held from June 10-14.

SW, area sports camp schedules

A Lady Mustang Bas-ketball Camp will be held June 2-5 at the Sweetwater Middle School gym on 305 Lamar Street. The camp is for students who have completed grades 2-8. The camp sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $35 which includes a T-shirt. Pre-registration is appreciated. A concession stand will be available. The camp’s goal is to improve players’ skills through instruction in individual skills and fun team competitions.

Area athletes are honored at BBC dinner in Abilene

Roscoe’s Eva Aguayo and Highland’s Michael Hyde were among 52 athletes — all selected by the Abilene Reporter-News as Best of the Big Country Student-Athletes of the Week — who were honored during an awards dinner at Abilene Christian University this past Saturday.
The 52 student-athletes were nominated by their coaches on the criteria of leadership, character, team-work and on-field perfor-mance. The award was created to draw attention to those representing their programs in a positive way on and off the field.

Top 2013-14 local stories all have an Austin connection

The three biggest stories of the 2013-14 school year that involved local athletes all had a direct connection to Austin.
Two of them — the success of the Highland girls basketball team in late February as well as over a dozen Class 1A, Division II track athletes just this past weekend — had to do with great athletic achievement and getting to compete in University Interscholastic League events that were held in Austin.

Highland’s best athletes receive banquet awards

The top Highland High School athletes in several sports were recognized at the school’s end-of-the-year banquet held recently.
Michael Hyde was the re-cipient of three honors, as he was presented with the Hornet football and boys track and field awards as well as receiving a Fighting Hornet Award.
Others honored at the banquet as their sport’s top athletes were Madison Moseley in cross country; Sierra Allen in girls basketball; Beth Richburg and Hannah Allen in girls track and field; and Ethan Wilson in boys basketball.

Sweetwater has the over-all MVP and the top new-comer — along with six first-team selections — on the All-District 4-3A base-ball team.
Greg Aiken, a senior and a four-year starter for Sweetwater at first base, got the highest honor by being named MVP. He led the team in batting (.442), hits (34), doubles (12), triples (4), RBI (34), and slugging (.740) while also hitting the Mustangs’ only home run.
Aiken, a four-time all-district performer, also made just two errors at first base in 195 chances. Last year, he was named District 4-3A’s defensive MVP.
