Nine earn all-BC honors

Six players from Black-well and three from Roscoe have received all-Big Coun-try football recognition by the Abilene Reporter-News.
Roscoe freshman linebacker Vincent Pantoja was named Newcomer of the Year on the Class 1A team, with senior defensive lineman Landon Jones on the second team and sophomore quarterback Matthew Davila receiving honorable mention. Pantoja had 92 solo tackles and 44 assisted stops for the Plowboys.

Highland and Roscoe girls stay undefeated

The two girls basketball teams from Nolan County in District 13-A, Division II are both 2-0 after winning their games Tuesday.
Highland (19-3 overall) crushed Ira 77-21, while Roscoe (13-8 overall) beat Westbrook 31-19.
Two players — Sierra Allen (29) and Beth Rich-burg (24) — combined for 53 of Highland’s 77 points against Ira. Also scoring were Morgan Monroe with seven, Kaylee Martin with five, Lora Stewart and Sydny Helbert with three and Hannah Allen, Madison Moseley and Schyler Kim-brell with two.

SHS holds fall sports banquet

Sweetwater High School honors its 2012 fall sports athletes with a banquet at 6 p.m. today at the Nolan County Coliseum annex.
Athletes will be honored in football, cross country and volleyball plus cheerleaders and trainers, and a season highlight video will be shown.

Sub-varsity boys split at Lake View
Sweetwater’s sub-varsity boys basketball teams got a split at Lake View Tuesday. The freshmen won 32-31 to improve to 6-0 this season, but the junior varsity boys lost 45-31 as they fell to 0-8 overall.

Late G’wood rally tops SW

After taking a five-point lead (38-33) early in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s key District 4-3A contest with Midland Greenwood, Sweetwater’s girls saw their hopes of a a 2-0 start and a share of the district lead slip away here Tuesday.
Greenwood rallied to go on an 11-2 run and stun the Lady Mustangs, 44-40, to improve to 2-0 in district.

Buzzer beater gives ‘Stangs their 7th straight victory

SAN ANGELO — The Sweetwater boys won their seventh straight game on Tuesday, but just barely. The Mustangs escaped with a thrilling 60-58 road win at San Angelo Lake View to improve to 11-7 overall.
Kaleb Hoover scored a season-high 23 points, including a tie-breaking layup as time ran out, to give Sweetwater the victory in its final tuneup for the start of District 4-3A action that begins Friday.
Sweetwater led 47-37 en-tering the fourth quarter after outscoring Lake View 24-13 in the third stanza, but the Chiefs rallied and tied it at 58 on a 3-pointer with 14 seconds left.

Undefeated JV girls crush Greenwood; freshmen lose

Sweetwater’s junior varsity girls made it 16 straight wins without a loss here on Tuesday as the Lady Mus-tangs crushed Greenwood, 53-23, to also improve to 2-0 in district play.
Shaneese Brown had 14 points and Bianca Castillo and Maddie Jones 10 for Sweetwater, while Cierra Knox had seven, Lexi Cast-illo five, Abby McPherson four, Morgan Whitley two and Nisha Williams one. The team also won 45-32 in its district opener at Big Spring on Friday as Brown scored 18, McPherson 12, Knox and Jones four, Jasmine Reddic three and Bianca Castillo two.

Updated: Lady ‘Stangs host G’wood in early district showdown

Sweetwater’s Lady Mustangs resume play with an early district showdown at home against Greenwood at 7:30 today in the main high school gym after winning their opener at Big Spring. The freshman girls will play at 5 p.m. and the Junior Varsity girls will play at 6:30 p.m., both games at Sweetwater Middle School.
Sweetwater and Greenwood are two of three 1-0 teams in District 4-3A along with Wylie, which plays at Monahans today.

Lady Mustangs hold off B-Spring

BIG SPRING — Visiting Sweetwater out-scored Big Spring in only one of the four eight-minute quarters the teams played when they opened District 4-3A basketball play on Friday.
Still, the Lady Mustangs did just enough to outlast the Lady Steers, 35-33, in a game that was in doubt until the final seconds.
Sweetwater’s big quarter came in the second when it blanked Big Spring 12-0 to take a 20-11 halftime lead.
But the Lady Mustangs actually ran off 19 straight points — beginning late in the first quarter and ending early in the third stanza — to turn an 11-5 deficit into a 24-11 advantage.
