Nolan County rivals faced each other when Highland and Roscoe met in junior high basketball action on Roscoe’s courts Monday. Their results follow:
Roscoe JH girls 20, Highland JH girls 14
Roscoe individual scor-ing: Karina Cisneros 5, Alyssa Chavez 4, Lacy Silva 4. Highland individual scoring: Karlie Allen 7, Madison Braden 5, Kellse Cornett 2. Halftime: Roscoe 14, Highland 5. Both teams’ records were unavailable.

SW gets split at Stanton

The Sweetwater boys lost but Sweetwater’s girls won in first-round basketball ac-tion Thursday at Stanton’s Hooptown Tournament.
The girls are in the semi-finals after beating Coaho-ma 42-29, while the boys had an afternoon consola-tion game after losing 50-33 to Sands in their opener.
Kendra Crosson poured in 23 points for Sweetwater’s girls (8-6), who advanced to play Stanton at 6 p.m. today in the semifinals. Sweet-water led 16-9, 25-16 and 32-22 at the breaks.
Shelby Cason scored nine points while Suede Shirley and Janell Walker had three and Elise Lawrence and Taylor McPherson two.

Roscoe and Highland take 1st-day wins at Hilltop Classic

Four area teams are off to a good start at Highland’s Hilltop Classic after winning their first-round games that were played Thursday.
The Roscoe girls and boys beat Blackwell 60-18 and 47-40, respectively, to reach today’s semifinals. The girls were to play Garden City at 3:30 p.m. and the boys’ tilt, also vs. Garden City, is at 8 p.m. The winners play for the title at 5 and 5:30 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.

Three teams win

The Highland girls picked up their 10th win while the Roscoe boys got into the win column for the first time on Tuesday night.
Highland’s girls improved to 10-2 as they rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit for a 62-50 win on the road at Albany. Highland trailed 31-21 at halftime, but then cut Albany’s lead to 40-38 after three quarters and used a 24-10 finish to get the victory. Sierra Allen led Highland by scoring 18 points while her sister, Hannah Allen, added 16. Sydny Helbert and Beth Richburg had nine points, Lora Stewart with six and Kaylee Martin and Madison Moseley two.

S’water squads swept at Merkel

Sweetwater High School’s basketball teams made the short trip to Merkel on Tuesday and lost both ends of their doubleheader.
Merkel girls 55, Sweetwater girls 19
Merkel, ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, defeated Sweet-water (7-6) for the second time in five days. The Lady Badgers won 47-33 when the teams met last Friday at Ballinger’s three-day tour-nament in a game Sweetwa-ter led at halftime. But it was never a contest this time as Merkel (14-0) led 14-4, 31-8 and 45-12 at the breaks.

All-district Mustangs

Six Sweetwater players have earned first team all-District 4-3A football honors and sophomore quarterback Kaegan Jeffrey is the co-newcomer of the year.
Three of the first team-ers — senior Willie Norman, junior Kaleb Hoover and sophomore Bray Amos — are wide receivers while the other three are on defense — senior lineman Tadeo Canon-Masjoan, senior linebacker Ryan Linebaugh and sophomore defensive back Isaiah McGee.

Mustangs, Lady ‘Stangs are both 4th at Ballinger

The Sweetwater boys and girls basketball teams both finished in fourth place at their respective weekend tournaments in Ballinger.
Sweetwater’s boys (2-3) lost to Clyde 59-46 in their third-place game Saturday. Deandre Gatson led Sweet-water with 16 points.
The Mustangs had defea-ted Hawley 43-29 to open the tournament on Thurs-day and advanced to Frid-ay’s semifinal before losing to Ballinger 50-48. Jim Ned won the title by defeating Ballinger 63-29 on Satur-day. Two Sweetwater play-ers were named to the all-tournament team — junior Dylan Bennett and sopho-more Rhett Torres.
