The 8-and-under West Texas Stampede girls softball team from Sweetwater went to the Abilene Summer Slam Tournament held July 20-21 and compiled a 5-2 record at the round-robin event for a second-place finish.

Ten years ago at the age of 30, Tarran McCoy of Sweetwater left his home-town for the Washington Redskinsâ€™ training camp in Landover, Md. to try out for a job, and survived the first cut before being let go about a month before the start of the regular season.
A decade later at age 40 â€” an age when NFL players are usually well into their next careers â€” he is ready to try again.
After spending time with three different NFL teams a year ago, former Sweetwater High School football star Joseph Banyard is hoping to find a home this season with the Minnesota Vikings.
Banyard is scheduled to report to the Vikingsâ€™ training camp today, which will be at Minnesota State University in Mankato, and begins practicing Friday. He hopes to still be around after the Vikingsâ€™ current 90-man roster is cut to the 53-player limit for the teamâ€™s season opener on Sept. 8.

Sweetwater High School volleyball coaches have released the Lady Mustangs' two-a-day workout schedule for the 2013 season.
Practices at the SHS gym will begin on Aug. 5, just one week before the season opens with a match at Grape Creek on Aug. 12. Scrimmages will be at San Angelo Central on Aug. 9 and at Frenship on Aug. 10. There are just three home matches â€” on Aug. 15 vs. Abilene Cooper, on Sept. 10 vs. Lamesa and on Sept. 24 vs. Levelland â€” before district play starts Sept. 28, when the Lady Mustangs go to Monahans.

Sweetwater High School head football coach Shane Mobley has released the Mustangs' two-a-day workout schedule for the 2013 season.
Workouts at the SHS practice field begin on Aug. 5 with all players in shorts. The first day to work out in pads will be Friday, Aug. 9.
Sweetwater's first scrimmage will be held Aug. 16 at Wichita Falls Hirschi, followed by the team's final scrimmage Thursday, Aug. 22 vs. San Angelo Lake View at Mustang Bowl. After the scrimmage, fans are urged to remain in order to "Meet the Mustangs."
Enrollment numbers for teams are in parentheses. The top four teams from each Class 3A district qualify for the playoffs; the two largest enrollments go to the Division I bracket and the two smaller schools go to Division II. In Class 1A, the top three teams in each district in both divisions â€” built off enrollment figures determined before the season â€” make the playoffs.

The Sweetwater Kiwanis Club and Sweetwater Lake & Marina will be holding a Kids Fishing Tournament on Saturday, July 20 for children ages 3-16.
The fishing tournament will be held from 8-10:30 a.m. at the Lake Sweetwater boat ramp, with lunch and prizes to follow.
Participants can pre-register for the event at the Sweetwater Lake & Marina or register on the morning of the tournament.

There are still a few summer sports camps left for local students to attend before the new school year begins.
A Mustang Golf Camp will be held July 16-18 at Sweetwater Country Club for ages 6 and up.
Sessions are from 9-11 a.m. each day. The cost of the camp will be $60 per child, with family discounts available.

A Mustang Football Camp will be held July 22-25 at Mustang Bowl from 7:30-10:30 a.m. daily for students entering grades 3-9.
Several members of next yearâ€™s Highland High School girls basketball team recently attended a Team Camp that was held at Lubbock Christian University.
At the camp, they participated in a tournament where they won eight of their nine games en route to claiming the tournament championship in the Grey Division.
Highland went 5-1 in pool play before taking all three of their games in the championship round.
