More experience could mean more wins at Blackwell

August 16, 2012

A very young and inexperienced Blackwell football team didn’t win any of their nine games on their field a year ago, though they did get a victory by forfeit.
But almost everyone is back, and the participation rate is high this season, with 21 of the 24 eligible boys signing up. Four of them — Ted Chambliss, Kaleb Edwards, Jayden Jones and Mason Magness — were all-district in 2011.

Youthful Highland hopes to be a contender

August 15, 2012

After advancing to the six-man state championship game three years ago, Highland has fallen on hard times of late, going just 5-14 the past two seasons.
But there were signs late last year that the Hornets were on the verge of turning things around. In fact, a muffed two-point kick at the end of a 43-42 loss to Aspermont in the next-to-last week was all that kept Highland from making it back to the postseason.

August 14, 2012

The Lady Mustangs play two more matches tonight at home against Seminole and Water Valley, with the first match at 6:15 p.m.
Water Valley is the defending Class 1A state champion and after graduating just one player from that team, the Lady Wildcats enter this season ranked No. 1, while Seminole is also considered a playoff-caliber squad.

Roscoe ready to win again

August 13, 2012

Roscoe knows even the best high school football programs aren’t immune from having down periods.
After 13 straight trips to the playoffs, the Plowboys are entering the 2012 sea-son on the heels of an 0-10 season, the program’s first winless season in 21 years.

Mobley ready to restore pride in Mustangs

August 13, 2012

In his previous tour of duty here from 2004 through 2007, Shane Mobley served as a top assistant for a high school football program that perennially ranked among the most successful not only in Class 3A but the entire state of Texas.
And since his return to Sweetwater in April, this time as the Mustangs’ head coach, Mobley has been consumed with getting the program back to that level.
After a quarter century of excellence starting in 1984 in which Sweetwater missed the playoffs only three times, the Mustangs have gone just 9-21 the past three seasons with no post-season appearances.

Furthermore, all five — middle blockers Kathleen Campbell and Shelby Cason, outside hitters Kel-si Crosson and Kendra Crosson and setter Suede Shirley — have at least two years of varsity experience.
