Roscoe knows even the best high school football programs aren’t immune from having down periods.
After 13 straight trips to the playoffs, the Plowboys are entering the 2012 sea-son on the heels of an 0-10 season, the program’s first winless season in 21 years.
In his previous tour of duty here from 2004 through 2007, Shane Mobley served as a top assistant for a high school football program that perennially ranked among the most successful not only in Class 3A but the entire state of Texas.
And since his return to Sweetwater in April, this time as the Mustangs’ head coach, Mobley has been consumed with getting the program back to that level.
After a quarter century of excellence starting in 1984 in which Sweetwater missed the playoffs only three times, the Mustangs have gone just 9-21 the past three seasons with no post-season appearances.
Liz Miller is beginning her 10th year as Sweetwater’s head volleyball coach, and her 2012 team — which will tip off play on Monday by hosting Grape Creek at 6:15 p.m. — also has a great deal of returning experience.
Of the team’s 12 players, eight are seniors and five of them — or 83 percent of the starting rotation — earned all-district honors in 2011.
Furthermore, all five — middle blockers Kathleen Campbell and Shelby Cason, outside hitters Kel-si Crosson and Kendra Crosson and setter Suede Shirley — have at least two years of varsity experience.
Several individuals re-ceived awards at the con-clusion of the two volley-ball camps that were held this past week at Sweet-water Middle School.
The awards were pre-sented by camp coaches Carla Lambert, Sandra Graham and Jill Locklar. Winners are as follows:
Top server — Elli Lehnert
Top passer — Mia Valdez
Self bump champion — Amber Knox
Self bump game winner — Madison Mims
Shagger girls — Hannah Mobley, Megan Kirkland, Michiah Royal
Mighty Lady Mustang — Faith Santiago
Perfect Form Award — Kara Lehnert
Top hitters — Julia Rees and Riley Dodd
The Sweetwater Middle School gym welcomed a large number of students when it hosted two volleyball camps this past week.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Joseph Banyard was the leading rusher again for the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, but his 27 yards on seven carries weren’t enough to keep the New England Patriots from eaking out a 7-6 victory.
Sweetwater High School tennis coach Chris Terry has announced that player tryouts will be held at the high school courts on Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 15-16, starting at 9 a.m.
Terry also announced that practices for the fall season will begin on Monday, Aug. 20 beginning at 4 p.m. at the high school courts.
Terry was hired as the new SHS tennis coach this summer to replace Shella Arnwine, who resigned to take coach-ing job in Roscoe.
Shane Mobley, Sweetwater’s new head football coach, talks with his players at the end of a practice held this morning. The Mustangs begin full contact drills Friday.
Two volleyball camps are being held this week at Sweetwater Middle School. Some of the girls in the morning session, which runs through Friday, are shown here. An afternoon camp is also being held through Thursday at the SMS gym for younger girls.
Volleyball players at the high school level are also having their first workouts this week at the SHS gym to get ready for the 2012 sea-son, where the Lady Mustangs’ opening matches will be played here next Monday and Tuesday.
Some of Roscoe’s football players are shown on Monday morning going through their opening practices for the 2012 season.
