Jayci Shelton did more than just set a meet record with her time of 45.56 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles Friday at the West Texas Relays in Odessa.
The SHS seniorâs winning time eclipsed the old record of 46.54 set in 2004 by her coach. Jessica Withrow was a high school star at Muleshoe when she set the previous Division II meet mark for the 300-meter hurdles, a mark broken Friday by Shelton. Losing the record, Withrow said, was âkind of bittersweet.â

Thanks to a big nine-run second inning and the pitching of Sterling Reeves, who allowed just three hits, the Mustangs easily defeated a Wylie team that came in with three straight wins.
All nine of Sweetwaterâs starters scored at least once in the contest. Reeves, Connor Stafford and Kris Mayes each had two RBI and Mayes had a double.
Sweetwaterâs Sam Nemir and Ryan Linebaugh finished 1-2 in the 165-pound weight class Friday at the boys Region I, Division II powerlifting meet at Sundown High School.
In doing so, they both qualified for the state meet to be held in Abilene on March 26.
