These three Roscoe athletes have qualified for the Class 1A regional powerlifting meet to be held Saturday at Sundown High School. Jose Rangel will compete in the 148-pound class, while Landon Jones will compete in the 181-pound class and Corey Hatcher in the 242-pound class.
Sweetwater High School’s Kelsey Painter and Bri Munoz will go to the state powerlifting meet in Corpus Christi later this month after qualifying at the regional meet that was held Saturday in Odessa.
Painter lifted a total of 675 pounds for a third-place finish in the 132-pound class. Munoz placed fourth in the 105-pound class, but also qualified for the state meet because her 550 total was the best of any Class 3A athlete in her weight class.
Three Sweetwater High School girls basketball players have earned recognition on the all-District 5-3A squad for their outstanding play this past season.
Alicia Finn, a 5-11 junior post who was the Lady Mustangs’ leading scorer and rebounder in district play, earned first team honors while Taylor McKoy, a 5-8 senior post, was chosen to the second team.
Kinsey Browning, a 5-3 junior guard, received all-district honorable mention.
Callie Sandusky and Sierra Allen have received two of District 11-1A’s top honors for Highland on the all-district girls basketball team. Sandusky was chosen as the defensive player of the year and Allen was named newcomer of the year. Another Highland player, Kara Hughey, was also selected to the 11-1A all-district team.
Highland was the district runnerup and finished with a 22-12 record this season, making the Region II-A tournament before losing to Newcastle in the semifinals.
The Sweetwater High School varsity baseball team had a 2-0-1 record through Friday at the 2011 Wood Bat Classic tournament held at Newman Park, and pitching was a big reason why. Shown is freshman Kaleb Hoover, who on Thursday threw a five-inning no-hitter in a 7-0 win over Post. The Mustangs also tied Ozona 5-5 on Friday before the game was called due to the tournament time limit. Sweetwater was 6-1-1 going into Saturday’s final day of the event when the team was scheduled to play games against Post, Slaton and Clyde.

Most people who follow baseball would agree that an inside-the-park home run and a no-hitter are two of the most exciting things in the sport.
Sweetwater fans got to see their team pull off both feats against Post in Thursday’s opening day of the Wood Bat Classic.
Cameron Fox’s inside-the-park homer capped a three-run outburst in the first inning off Post’s Chess Postell. And that was more than enough cushion for Sweetwater’s freshman hurler Kaleb Hoover, who pitched a no-hitter in his five-inning stint and struck out six in a 7-0 win.
