ABILENE â€” After win-ning a tiebreaker to make it to the semifinal round as a wild card entry and then defeating Abilene North 6-5 on Tuesday, Sweetwaterâ€™s run at the District 5 Junior League (ages 13-14) title came to an end on Thursday as Abilene South won 12-2 in the championship game at Abilene Wylieâ€™s field.
ABILENE â€” Sweetwater will be represented in two of the final three District 5 Little League all-star championship games today after semifinal wins on Tuesday.
Sweetwaterâ€™s 13-14 year-old all-stars will take on Abilene South at 7 p.m. in the Junior League final at Abilene Wylie after beating Abilene North, 6-5, in their semifinal.
The 10 and under all stars from Sweetwater Fastpitch recently competed in the state tournament in McKinney Texas. The team ended up being state champions. The girls are Zoe Cornett, Alicia Gomez, Madison Hernandez, Zoee Jeffrey, Elli Lehnert, Kendale Orozco, Liberty Saenz, Mia Valdez, Rose Vera, Jazi Villa and Kaci Webb. Coaches are Ryan Jeffrey, Adrian Gomez, Samantha Webb and Chris Gomez.
Two Sweetwater Little League all-star teams have advanced to the District 5 elimination round and will play semifinal games in Abilene today, while a third local team narrowly missed joining them.
Sweetwaterâ€™s 11-12 year-olds advanced by shutting out Merkel 6-0 in their final pool game to finish with a 2-1 record, and join the three pool winners as as a wild card entry after having the lowest runs-allowed per inning ratio of the pool runnerups.
A Sweetwater team com-prised of 16-18 year-olds, all of whom played for Sweet-water High Schoolâ€™s varsity baseball team this past year, represented District 5 this past weekend when it played at a Big League Section 2 tournament in Garland.
Sweetwater won its first two games to reach Sundayâ€™s championship game before losing twice to Arlington, which advanced to play in a Big League state tournament at All Saints High School in Fort Worth starting this Friday.
The Sweetwater Junior Leaguers are in the District 5 semifinals, and two more local all-star teams have a chance to do the same by winning their final pool games tonight.
The 9-10 year-old stars play Jim Ned at 6 p.m. at Abileneâ€™s Cal Young Park while the 11-12 year-olds play Merkel, also at 6 p.m., in Snyder. The Junior Leaguers (13-14 year-olds) play their semifinal at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Abilene North at Abilene Northâ€™s field, where a win will send them to Thursdayâ€™s championship game at Wylie.
Semifinal play for both the 9-10 and 11-12 year-olds begins Tuesday.
