Roscoe picked off by Gorman

GORMAN — Despite one of its best offensive efforts of the season, Roscoe had six turnovers in a 42-21 loss at Gorman on Friday.
Roscoe finished with 323 total yards to Gorman’s 332 in the contest, which leaves both teams 2-3 in district play with two games left.
Individually, two Roscoe players enjoyed big nights offensively by finishing with over 100 yards each. Eduardo Gallegos led all Plowboy rushers with 123 yards on eight carries. The top receiver, Shelton Toli-ver, had 110 yards on seven catches.
Roscoe’s 21 points were its second highest one-game total of the season.

District football action will be in full swing today

With a mere three weeks left in the regular season, all four high school teams in Nolan County will finally be playing the games that really matter — the ones involving other teams in their districts — starting today.
Sweetwater and Roscoe are well into their district schedules, and both have important games in District 4-3A and District 7-1A, Div-ision II, respectively, that they may need to win in order to remain viable contenders for the state playoffs that will begin next month. Sweetwater (1-1) goes to Big Spring (0-2), while Roscoe (2-2) is also on the road at Gorman (1-3) today.

Mustangs need win to eliminate Steers, stay in playoff contention

For the second straight week, Sweetwater will be facing a team Friday that is desperate for a win in order to remain a viable conten-der for the postseason.
The Mustangs are facing a Big Spring team that is 0-2 in district play after rolling through its non-district schedule with a 5-0 record. The Steers can’t afford ano-ther loss, but Sweetwater (3-4, 1-1) will be almost as desperate when it takes the field at Big Spring.

Football Player of the Week

Willie Norman is the Football Player of the Week for Sweetwater.
Norman, a senior wide receiver and defensive back, had six catches for 103 yards last week against Midland Greenwood, and also recorded three solo tackles with one assisted tackle on defense.

Lady ‘Stangs lose finale

Eight Sweetwater seniors played their final volleyball match in a three-game loss to No. 1-ranked Wylie on Tuesday at Mustang Gym.
Immediately after their 16-25, 19-25, 16-25 defeat, the eight Lady Mustangs — all of whom played key roles in Sweetwater’s most successful season in four years — were recognized during a ceremony at the gym by Sweetwater coach Liz Miller, who admitted she wasn’t ready for it to end.
“I thought we did pretty well tonight,” she said. “I was proud of them. We didn’t just lay down. I’m just sad that it’s over.

JV and freshman teams win

Sweetwater’s junior var-sity and freshman football teams were victorious at Greenwood and Big Spring, respectively, last Thursday.
Both teams will be back home to host Big Spring at the Bowl this Thursday.
Sweetwater’s JV team is now 5-2 after defeating Greenwood’s JV 40-6.
Max Gomez was 13-of-24 passing for 194 yards and four touchdowns, with Sean Norman scoring two TDs on catches of 24 and 28 yards. Norman finished with four catches for 84 yards.

SMS football teams get split with Greenwood

The four Sweetwater Mid-dle School football teams came away with a split de-cision against Greenwood this past Thursday as the seventh and eighth grade Red squads won while the White teams lost.
Sweetwater travels to Big Spring this Thursday.
7th grade Red 70, Greenwood 0
Showing dominance from the start, Sweetwater Red led 24-0, 38-0 and 56-0 at the quarter breaks and ran its season record to 5-0.

SMS tennis nips Snyder

The Sweetwater Middle School tennis team won 14 of 27 matches vs. Snyder in a match played Monday.
The team will end its season at Midland’s Tall City tournament on Nov. 10.
