The 2011-12 Sweetwater High School softball team was honored prior to Fridayâ€™s District 4-3A opener against Snyder for becoming the first team to make the playoffs in 15 years.

Sweetwater High School athletes Ashley Lara and Alexis Thompson competed at the Class 3A girls state powerlifting meet that was held in Corpus Christi this past weekend. Both were making their first state ap-pearance.
Lara lifted a total of 620 pounds in the three categories â€” squat, bench press and dead lift â€” to place 14th in the 198-pound division while Thompson lifted a total of 520 pounds in the 114-pound weight division to place 19th.

Sweetwater varsity hosts Midland Greenwood (district opener), 7 p.m.
Sweetwater varsity boys at Lamesa tournament.
Sweetwater varsity and JV teams will host Midland Greenwood at 5 and 7 p.m., respectively.

A flag honoring the 2012 Sweetwater softball team for making the playoffs was unveiled in a brief pre-game ceremony on Friday at the Jerry Collins Complex.
Then it was the 2013 Lady Mustangsâ€™ turn to make a impression, and they were up to the challenge in their District 4-3A opener against Snyder.
After falling behind 2-0, Sweetwater sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning against three pitchers and scored 10 runs to take a commanding 10-2 lead. After that, it was just a matter of bringing it home as the Lady Mustangs held on for an 11-8 victory.
After a lackluster effort one day earlier at Lubbock Estacado, the Sweetwater baseball team got back into the win column at home Friday when it faced former district rival Brownwood.
The Mustangs got an ex-cellent pitching effort from sophomore J.P. Poe in their final non-district game in beating the Lions, 5-3, at Newman Park. They also overcame a shaky defensive outing as they had six errors in the contest.

8TH GRADE BOYS
Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s varsity softball team will begin district play against Snyder at 5 p.m. today at Jerry Collins Complex. The JV softball team will also start district against Snyder immediately after the varsity game today.

Bax and Bryan Vause teamed up for a second-place finish in boys â€˜Aâ€™ doubles at Brownwood while Michael Redondo and Brandon Howell teamed up to win consolation in boys â€˜Bâ€™ doubles.
Also, Tyler Stacy was second in boys â€˜Câ€™ singles at Brownwood and Victoria Carly was second in girls â€˜Câ€™ singles.
Alexis Thompson and Ashley Lara of Sweetwater will compete at the girls state powerlifting meet on Saturday after both of them placed second at regionals. The state meet will be in Corpus Christi.
Thompson lifted a total of 515 pounds to finish second in the 114-pound class at the regional meet in Fort Stockton. Lara lifted a total of 630 pounds in the 198-pound class.
Both are making their first trip to the state meet for Sweetwater.
Donald Baker of Sweet-water will compete at the boys state meet to be held March 23 in Abilene. He will be competing in the 148-pound weight class.
Sweetwater had a number of JV athletes compete at its Rattlesnake Relays meet this past Thursday.
The JV boys scored 139 points to finish second to San Angelo Centralâ€™s 234.
Jonathan Browning won three events as he placed first in the 100 dash (11.16), triple jump (38-5 1/2) and and high jump (6-0), while Deshaun Williams won the long jump (18-8 1/2).
Browning and Williams were also on the Mustangsâ€™ first-place 400 relay (47.16), as were Marquees Jenkins and Austin Kamer.
