Steers hit 11 treys in 64-35 win

The first quarter of Tues-day’s District 5-3A basket-ball game between Sweet-water and Big Spring featured five lead changes and ended with the visitors up by just a point, 11-10.
Midway through the sec-ond quarter, it was still a contest as the Mustangs trailed by just three (17-14). But the Steers caught fire at that point, going on a 15-1 run to lead by 17, 32-15, at halftime, and never looked back en route to a 64-35 win at Mustang Gym.

Lady Mustangs fall to Lady Steers, 58-39

After falling behind 10-0 in the first two minutes of play, Sweetwater twice rallied to within striking distance of Big Spring in Tues-day’s district girls game.
Both times, however, the Lady Steers responded with a decisive run as they beat the Lady Mustangs, 58-39, at Mustang Gym.
Sweetwater (0-3, 14-14) narrowed the lead to 16-12 on a three-pointer by Ken-dra Crosson early in the second quarter, only to see Big Spring (1-2, 17-7) run off the next nine points.

Sub-varsity teams get one victory

The Sweetwater junior varsity girls picked up the lone victory against Big Spring in sub-varsity action here Tuesday as they prevailed, 23-19, to improve to 15-4 overall and 3-0 in district play.
Kayla Chowning and Claire Williams had six points, Maddie Jones five, Taylor McPherson four and Shaneese Brown two for Sweetwater.
The freshman girls (14-3, 1-2) lost 43-28. Cierra Knox scored 10, Abby McPherson seven, Bianca Castillo and Jas-mine Reddic four, Lexi Castillo two and Gabby Reyes one.
The JV boys (13-8, 0-2) lost, 44-30, in their game with Big Spring.

Highland, Blackwell girls collect easy wins

Highland and Blackwell rolled up lopsided victories in area girls high school basketball action Tuesday.
Highland — ranked No. 18 in Class 1A, Division II in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll — knocked off Hermleigh, 58-33, to improve to 6-1 in District 11-A, Division II and 18-6 overall.
Sierra Allen had 21 points to pace the Lady Hornets, while Kara Hughey had 11. Also scoring were Morgan Monroe and Lora Stewart with five points and Beth Richburg, Kaylee Martin, Schyler Kimbrell and Megan Thompson with four.

SHS varsity girls basketball team

The Sweetwater High School varsity girls basketball team hosts Big Spring in a District 5-3A game at 6 p.m. today at Mustang Gym. The varsity boys game follows at 7:30 p.m. The 2011-12 girls team includes, from left, Hayley Brownlow, Kendra Crosson, Janell Walker, Kelsi Crosson, Kinsey Browning, Alicia Finn, Candice Hernandez, Elise Lawrence, Kathleen Campbell, Suede Shirley and Shelby Cason. SHS seeks 1st 5-3A victories again

After losing District 5-3A contests to a pair of Wylie squads ranked in the state’s top 25 on Friday, the Sweetwater High School boys and girls will try again today as they entertain Big Spring. This time, the odds may be more favorable as Big Spring, like Sweetwater, is also winless in District 5-3A play.
The girls (0-2, 14-13) tip off at 6 p.m. against a Big Spring team that is also off to an 0-2 start, although the Lady Steers have an impressive 16-7 season record.
Big Spring has played a tougher schedule, facing No. 1-ranked Wylie and No. 7 Brownwood so far.

Gonzales among Super Team honorees

Mateo Gonzales of Sweetwater was among a handful of area high school football players to earn recognition on the All-Big Country Super Team announced Sunday by the Abilene Reporter-News.
The 5-10, 225-pound senior was named to the second team as a defen-sive lineman after recor-ding 43 solo tackles in-cluding 16 tackles for a loss, 32 assists and three sacks.

Bulldogs’ fast start blows away ‘Stangs in 5-3A opener

Sweetwater managed to outscore its state-ranked opponent in the second and fourth quarters of Friday’s District 5-3A opener at Mustang Gym.
But Wylie, ranked No. 22 in Class 3A, was ahead 27-8 after one period and rolled from there to a 76-49 win over the Mustangs.
Sweetwater (9-15) outscored the Bulldogs 11-9 in the second quarter to go into the dressing room trailing by 17 points, 36-19, before Wylie turned on the jets again with a 23-5 run in the third stanza that left Sweetwater trailing 59-24.

Little comes up big as No. 1 Wylie girls get win

Facing the top-ranked and defending Class 3A state champion Wylie girls, Sweetwater turned in a fairly solid effort here Friday and even held a few leads in the early going.
But the Lady Bulldogs, and especially scoring ace Peyton Little, proved too much to handle as Wylie pulled away to win 71-45 behind Little’s 37 points — 30 of them in the first half.
