After suffering its first defeat one week earlier, Sweetwaterâ€™s JV football team (4-1) got back in the win column this past week with a 38-13 victory over Brownwood at Mustang Bowl.
Sweetwater Middle School teams won just one of their four games against Brown-wood this past Thursday in Brownwood.
The SMS seventh grade Red team was the lone win-ner as it improved to 3-0 with a 22-18 victory. The seventh and eighth grade White had their first games after being a combined team the first two weeks of the season and lost by scores of 16-6 and 12-0, respectively, while the eighth grade Red is now 0-3 after a 32-0 set-back to Brownwood.
Some losses hurt a little more than others.
That was the case here on Saturday as the Sweetwater volleyball team let what ap-peared to be a sure win turn into a five-game loss in a crucial District 4-3A match against Big Spring.
Sweetwater (1-2, 21-12) rallied from a 25-23 loss in the opener to win the next two by scores of 25-20 and 25-18, and was on the verge of closing out the match af-ter going ahead 22-18 in the fourth game.
But Big Spring went on a 7-1 run to win 25-23 and force a Game 5.

BROWNWOOD â€” After pulling within eight points of Brownwood with 6:52 left and then forcing the Lions to start consecutive possessions from inside their 5-yard line, Sweetwater was poised to complete a rainy fourth-quarter comeback here Friday.
Clinging to a 21-13 lead, Brownwood was pinned at its 2 after a 47-yard punt by Sweetwater quarterback Kaegan Jeffrey with 4:08 to play. But the Lions went to their wildcat formation, and Eddie Duque raced 95 yards before finally being dragged down at Sweetwaterâ€™s 3.
Roscoe kicked off District 7-1A, Division II play with a 14-0 win over Bairdâ€™s Bears on Friday. The big news? Not only was it the teamâ€™s first win, but also Roscoeâ€™s first victory since late in the 2010 season.
Roscoe (1-3) got touch-downs from Eduardo Gal-legos and Vincent Pantoja, and the defense shut down Baird (1-3) to complete the victory. The Bears finished with just 157 yards.
Pantoja gave the Plowboys a 6-0 lead when he scored on a 16-yard run in the first quarter.
Sweetwaterâ€™s freshman football team improved to 4-1 by defeating Brownwood 16-6 here Thursday.
Max Gomez threw touchdown passes of 80 yards to Michael Lawrence and 30 yards to Scott Warner, plus a two-point pass to Adrian Vizzerra, and Corey Mendez had a safety. Dylan Jimenez, Dâ€™Jaman West, Austin Kamer and Mark Lawrence were also offensive standouts. On defense, Lawrence had two interceptions and West one, and Israel Vera, Branson Guelker, Daniel Maldonado, Warner, Den-zell Moore, Vizzerra and Mendez were the other defensive standouts.
Four Sweetwater Middle volleyball teams played host to teams from Wylie this past week but none came away with a victory.
Their results follow:
7th grade White: lost 14-25, 8-25. Sweetwater service points: Kallie Hayes 4, Xaveria Clark 3, Lexi Lara 3, Marissa Gonzales 2, Kayleen Rudel 1.
7th grade Red: lost 25-23, 16-25, 15-25. Sweetwater service points not available.
8th grade White: lost 19-25, 12-25. Sweetwater service points: Lexi Kamer 7, Natalie Valdez 6, Jacinda Garcia 2, Sonya Sanchez 2, Katelynn Painter 1, Danielle Vega 1.
The consolidated churches of Holy Family, Immaculate Heart of Mary and St. Albert participated in this yearâ€™s softball coed church league organized by Emmanuel Fellowship Church. The â€˜Cathletesâ€™ ended their season with a Sunday of burgers and hotdogs for the team members and their families, and there was also a game between the chldren and the adults.
After getting a week off, Roscoeâ€™s football team is back in action today to start District 7-1A, Division II play at Baird. Roscoe (0-3) is still looking for its first win of the 2012 season after losses to De Leon, Irion County and Miles so far. However, the Plowboys face a Baird team (1-2) that has lost to De Leon and Haskell after defeating Menard in its season opener.
