Facing the top-ranked and defending Class 3A state champion Wylie girls, Sweetwater turned in a fairly solid effort here Friday and even held a few leads in the early going.
But the Lady Bulldogs, and especially scoring ace Peyton Little, proved too much to handle as Wylie pulled away to win 71-45 behind Littleâ€™s 37 points â€” 30 of them in the first half.
Roscoe swept Rotan in a basketball doubleheader on Friday as both teams won for the first time in District 9-A, Division I play.
The Roscoe boys are 1-1 after edging Rotan 33-32, following a 42-26 win by the girls (1-2) in the opener.
Roscoeâ€™s Jesus Leanos had a team-high 19 points the boys led 10-6 after one period, 18-12 at halftime and 27-23 at the end of three quarters before holding off a late rally by Rotan. Dillon Freeman had six points, John Hermosillio four and Cutter Davilla and Keeston Ford two apiece.
Despite scoring just five points in the second half, Sweetwaterâ€™s JV girls basketball team beat Wylie 28-27 here Friday.
With the win, the Lady Mustangs stayed unbeaten (2-0) in District 5-3A play and improved to 14-4 for the season. Taylor McPherson scored eight points to pace Sweetwater while Shaneese Brown had seven, Maddie Jones four, Mikki Reschman three and Kayla Chowning, Lar-issa Locklar and Claire Williams two. Sweetwater was ahead 11-8 after one quarter and 23-18 at halftime, but it was tied at 24 after three periods.
The Sweetwater eighth grade Red boys and Sweetwater seventh grade Red girls both came away with championships in middle school basketball tournaments that were played earlier this month.
Sweetwaterâ€™s eighth grade boys Red team took the title at the Wall tournament on Jan. 6-7 by winning games over Wylieâ€™s â€˜Bâ€™ team, 44-16; Ballinger, 37-16; and finally Wall, 36-18, in the champ-ionship game.

Sweetwater girls host Wylie â€” JV at 4:30 p.m., varsity at 6 p.m., freshmen at 7:30 p.m.
Sweetwater boys host Wylie (district openers) â€” JV at 4:30 p.m., freshmen at 6 p.m., varsity at 7:30 p.m.
Roscoe varsity girls and boys host Rotan, 6:30 and 8 p.m.
Blackwell varsity girls and boys host Sterling City starting at 6:30 p.m.
Highland JV and varsity girls and boys idle.
SATURDAY, JAN. 14
Sweetwater boys and girls compete at season-opening meet in Miles.
District 5-3A play will be in full swing starting today both of Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s varsity basketball teams host Abilene Wylie.
Sweetwaterâ€™s girls, 0-1 after losing to Snyder in their district opener Tuesday, tip off at 6 p.m. while the boys begin district at 7:30 p.m.
Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s boys and girls powerlifters compete at their first 2012 meet on Saturday at Miles.
SHS will also have joint meets Jan. 19 at Big Spring, Feb. 9 at Clyde and Feb. 18 when Sweetwater hosts the final qualifying meet. Also, the boys go to Abilene High Jan. 28 and the girls will compete at Grape Creek on Feb. 4. Regional meets are March 3 at Monahans (girls) and March 10 at Sundown (boys), while the state meets are March 17 at Corpus Christi (girls) and March 24 in Abilene (boys).
Little League signups will begin Monday
Six Sweetwater players today earned Class 3A all-Big Country football recognition from the Abilene Reporter-News.
Of the six Mustangs who were honored, three made the first team â€” Mateo Gonzales on the defensive line and Dylon Adames and Malcolm Jackson on the offensive line.
Nick Nemir made the second team as a defensive back. His older brother Sam Nemir (linebacker) and Taylor Jones (quarterback) got all-Big Country honorable mention on the Class 3A team.
Four Roscoe players on Tuesday earned Class 1A all-Big Country football recognition by the Abilene Reporter-News.
Three Plowboys made the second team â€” Luke Rovig at defensive back and punter, Devon Free-man on the offensive line and Eric Padilla at place-kicker. Padilla at linebacker and offensive lineman Corey Hatcher received all-Big Country honorable mention.
Rovig, a 5-5, 138-pound sophomore, had 65 tackles, 10 pass breakups and three fumble recoveries as a defensive back and also punted for a 28.4 average on 36 kicks. Padilla, a 5-9, 165-pound senior, was 5-for-5 on PATs.
Sweetwaterâ€™s sub-varsity teams captured three wins in high school basketball action Tuesday.
Sweetwaterâ€™s junior varsity and freshman girls beat Snyder by scores of 41-38 and 37-25, respectively, in their district openers played at Snyder.
The Sweetwater junior varsity and freshman boys played at San Angelo Lake View in their final non-district outings. The freshman boys won 52-49, but the JV boys lost 52-47.
