May 4, 2012

Joe Banyard — a former Sweetwater High School athlete who spent his last two collegiate seasons as a star running back at the University of Texas-El Paso — is scheduled to be in Jacksonville, Fla. today to begin a three-day NFL rookie minicamp after signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent.
Banyard is one of the team’s 17 undrafted rookie free agents, which include LSU defensive end Kendrick Adams, Ohio State center Mike Brewster and Virginia Tech receiver Jarrett Boykin.

Let’s hope ‘trend’ continues

The final outcome of Sat-urday’s Class 3A bi-district softball playoff in Graham may not have been satisfy-ing for Sweetwater fans, but the 9-0 loss to Iowa Park told only part of the story.
Those who (like me) have followed the local high school sports scene in recent years have no doubt noticed how little success Sweetwater has had, especially in the “team” sports. But the school’s softball program, which had endured the longest playoff drought — 15 years — of any of them, at least did its part to change that.

Iowa Park shuts down SW, 9-0

April 30, 2012

GRAHAM — A big reason Sweetwater ended a 15-year softball playoff drought this year was its hitting.
But the Lady Mustangs met their match Saturday, as they were held to two hits by Iowa Park in a 9-0 win that ended their season.

Nemir 4th at regionals

LUBBOCK — Sweetwa-ter’s Nick Nemir was fourth in the boys 300-meter hur-dles Saturday after record-ing a time of 39.88 seconds at the Region I-3A track meet which was held at Texas Tech University.
Nemir, the only Sweet-water boys athlete to place, was 1.06 seconds behind second-place Blake Eschbach of Glen Rose. The top two in each event advance to the state track meet May 11-12 in Austin.
Nemir also went to regionals in the 30o hurdles last year but did not make the finals.

Ex-Sweetwater star Joe Banyard is now an undrafted free agent with the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars after being offered a contract by the team Saturday.
Banyard, a running back at the University of Texas-El Paso the past two years, was picked up along with his UTEP teammate Antwon Blake. In addition, UTEP’s Donovan Kemp was signed by the Dallas Cowboys and a fourth UTEP player, Matt Camilli, signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.
