Blackwell falls to W-Valley

WATER VALLEY — Both of Blackwelll’s basketball teams lost to Water Valley on Tuesday.
The Blackwell girls (1-5 in district) lost 58-20. Reccie Roland had five, Stephanie Metcalf four, Shelby Alley three and Amanda Bullard, Leo Castelo, Summer Mull and Mireya Sanchez two.
The Blackwell boys (0-4 district) lost 80-22. Jayden Jones had 14 points and Wade Allen and Mason Magness four.

Lady Stangs drop 5-3A opener, 56-47

SNYDER — Sweetwater’s District 5-3A girls opener at Snyder got off to a rough start on Tuesday, as the host Lady Tigers jumped out to a 21-13 lead after one quarter and never looked back en route to a 56-47 win.

Roscoe, Highland teams at opposite ends of DH sweep

Roscoe’s teams had their first district doubleheader of the high school basket-ball season Tuesday, but Haskell came away with victories in both games.
Haskell won the girls game 37-25, then ended the night with a 63-29 victory in the boys contest.
Lynnsi Moses led Ros-coe’s girls (0-2) with a team-high 11 points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Jacinda Morales had seven points and four steals, while Sara Kingston scored four points and Torrey Willman had three.

Hoover hits 28, but SW boys fall

SAN ANGELO — The Sweetwater boys basket-ball team got a great in-dividual scoring effort from Kaleb Hoover in its final non-district game on Tuesday as the 6-2 sophomore torched San Angelo Lake View for 28 points. But he was vir-tually a one-man crew, as the Mustangs came away with a 44-29 loss.
Sweetwater (9-14) was able to stay close until Lake View (7-14) pulled away down the stretch after leading the Mustangs by just three points near the end of the third period.

Falcon named all-BC

Highland’s Tyler Falcon has been named as a second team linebacker on the Six-Man All-Big Country foot-ball team by the Abilene Reporter-News and also received honorable mention as a running back.
Falcon had 76 solo tackles with 20 assists, 12 tackles for a loss and seven sacks, and also forced four fumbles and recovered one.

Bearcats hold off Mustangs, 63-59

The Sweetwater boys basketball team slowly fought back Friday from a six-point deficit early in the fourth quarter ot its non-district game at Mustang Gym, finally taking a one-point lead (59-58) on a field goal by Tino Martinez that came with 1:32 left and capped an 11-4 surge. However, the Bearcats came back to score the game’s last five points and escape with a 63-59 victory.

JV, freshman boys defeat Ballinger to stay on a roll

Sweetwater’s two boys sub-varsity teams continued their winning ways here on Friday by defeating Ballinger squads.
The JV boys are now 13-5 after they rallied for a 45-33 win, and the freshman boys improved their mark to 8-3 by beating Ballinger 47-17 in their first game of 2012.
Trey Taylor poured in 24 points for the JV, who came back strong in the second half after trailing 10-8 at the end of the first quarter and by three points, 21-18, at halftime. Sweetwater was up by three points (28-25) after winning the third per-iod 10-4, then pulled away with a 17-8 finish.

JV girls lose to Aspermont

Sweetwater’s JV girls basketball team got in one final non-district game on Friday. The Lady Mustangs traveled to Aspermont and lost to its varsity team, 53-43, after trailing by just two points at the end of three quarters.

Area teams get just one district victory

The state-ranked High-land girls were the only area team to win on Friday among the five high school squads from Nolan County who competed in district basketball games.
Highland, ranked No. 21 in Class A, Division II, won its contest at Trent 41-28 to improve to 16-6 overall and 4-1 in district.
Sierra Allen scored 19 points to pace the Lady Hornets. Kara Hughey had seven, Beth Richburg five, Kaylee Martin four and Madison Moseley, Lora Stewart and Megan Thompson all finished with two points.
