Starting today, a number of Nolan County high school athletes will be competing in district competition with hopes of advancing to the next level.
For some, that hope could be realized as soon as this weekend while others may have to wait two weeks or more to learn their fates.
And for the Sweetwater boys and girls track teams, this week will be spent in preparation for their district meets that wonâ€™t be held until April 11-12.
MONDAY, APRIL 2
Sweetwater JV will host Big Spring, 5 p.m.
Sweetwater JV and varsity girls will play second leg of district tournament at Big Spring.
Blackwell teams play first leg of district tourna-ment at San Angelo.
Sweetwater middle school teams will host Wylie, 4 p.m.
TUESDAY, APRIL 3
Sweetwater varsity plays at Big Spring, 5 p.m.
Sweetwater JV and varsity boys host second leg of district tournament at Sweetwater Country Club.
Sweetwater JV and var-sity play at Big Spring, 5 and 6:30 p.m.
SNYDER â€” After starting a four-game road gauntlet through District 5-3A with an impressive 14-8 win over Brownwood on Tuesday, Sweetwaterâ€™s baseball team had a chance to move into undisputed second place by beating Snyder on Friday.
But after taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, things gradually fell apart for the Mustangs as Snyder â€” which came in desperately needing a win after starting out district 0-2 â€” roared back for a 13-6 win at Moffett Field.
SNYDER â€” After being held to no runs and just two hits through the first four innings, the Sweetwater softball team scored three runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 3-2 victory at Snyder to leave both teams in a tie for second place in District 5-3A at 2-2.
Sweetwater High School sent its track teams on Thursday to Colorado Cityâ€™s Lone Wolf Relays for a final tuneup prior to the District 5-3A meets that will be held April 11-12 at Wylie.
Sweetwaterâ€™s varsity girls scored 76 points to record a fourth-place finish in their division, while Sweetwaterâ€™s varsity boys placed ninth with 28 points in their division. The JV boys team also competed at Colorado City on Thursday and scored 52 points for a fifth-place finish in their division.

Roscoe High School sent three track teams to Color-ado Cityâ€™s Lone Wolf Relays on Thursday for a last tuneup to district meets scheduled Wednesday and Friday in Albany. Results follow:

Sweetwaterâ€™s golf teams are both close to the lead following the opening leg of their respective District 5-3A tournaments this week. The girls are just one shot out of the lead in their event after shooting a 356 in Wednesdayâ€™s first round at Abileneâ€™s Maxwell Municipal Golf Course, while the boys shot a 320 and sit just three strokes out of the lead after the first round of their event which began Thursday at Snyderâ€™s Western Texas College.
The Sweetwater Texans youth football league team is shown during a recent practice. Sweetwater will take on the Abilene Buccaneers at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Abileneâ€™s Taylor County Expo Center for its season opener and then plays Breckenridge at 11 a.m. Saturday. The league consists of fifth and sixth graders. This yearâ€™s coaches are Sammy Alvarez Jr., Joe Hall, Randy Melendez and John Castillo.
