BRECKENRIDGE â The Sweetwater girls basketball team, after winning its first two games at home, went on the road for the first time Tuesday and improved to 3-0 this season with a 51-22 victory over Breckenridge.
Kendra Crosson had 20 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Lady Mustangs, while Sweetwaterâs defense had its best game yet as it held Breckenridge to single digits in all four quarters.
Sweetwater â which gets a tough road test this Friday at Class 5A Abilene High â led 13-2, 23-11 and 32-15 at the breaks and outscored Breckenridge 19-7 over the final eight minutes.
The Roscoe girls basket-ball team got its first win of the season Tuesday, and it came at the expense of ano-ther Nolan County squad.
The Plowgirls (1-1) used dominant second and third quarters to come away with a 58-21 win at Blackwell.
Roscoe led just 8-6 after one quarter, but exploded for 27 second-quarter points in building a 35-11 advantage. The Plowgirls then outscored Blackwell 19-2 in the third period to open up a commanding 54-13 lead over their hosts and coasted from there to the victory.
HIGHLAND â Highlandâs basketball teams pulled off a sweep against Robert Lee Tuesday as the boys won their opener, 42-39, and the girls (2-1) prevailed 39-31.
Ron Covington scored 17 points, Kaden Nachlinger nine, Ethan Wilson six, Shelby Howard five, Lara-mie Thompson four and Brandon Steven one for the boys while in the girls game, Kara Hughey had 14 points, Sierra Allen 11, Beth Rich-burg five, Schyler Kimbrell four, Lora Stewart three and Megan Thompson two. Both teams play at Guthrie this Friday.
HAWLEY â Sweetwaterâs junior varsity boys basket-ball team easily defeated the Hawley JV boys, 50-11, to begin their season Tuesday.
Trey Taylor had 20 points to pace the Mustangs, who led 15-4 after one quarter, 27-6 at halftime and 38-7 after three periods en route to the victory.
Dylan Bennett had eight points and Brandon Howell, Isaiah McGee and Duanta Williams four, Mike McCoy three, Deandre Gatson, Marquees Jenkins and Rhett Torres two and Quen-tin Wetsel one.
The Roscoe Collegiate High School Spanish Club will host a warball tourna-ment this Saturday, Nov. 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the RCHS gym. The price per team is $30. Each team will consist of six players with a maximum of two substitutes (6-8 players allowed).
Sweetwater will host three high school playoff games this weekend at Mustang Bowl.
Muleshoe (9-1) and Godley (10-1) will meet in a Class 2A, Division I area matchup at 7:3o p.m. Friday. The winner will advance to the regional round to face either Merkel or Childress the following week.
The Highland girls basketball team got its first win of the 2011-12 season this past Friday by easily defeating Eula, 59-23. The Lady Hornets (1-1) were led by Sierra Allenâs 27 points. Beth Richburg (19 points) was also in double figures, while Kara Hughey scored nine points and Megan Thompson had four. Highland led 17-2, 31-6 and 42-12 at the breaks. But Highlandâs JV girls lost to Eula, 39-10, with Schyler Kimbrell scoring six points and Mia Herrera four.
Jacinda Morales of Roscoe had a time of 13:09.17 on Saturday to place 18th out of 103 girls runners in the Class 1A division at the state cross country meet held at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
Morales, a senior, had a regional time of 12:37.24 the prevous week at the regional cross country meet. She was making her second state appearance.
Sweetwater turned a nine-point lead after three periods into a seven-point deficit with under two minutes to play. But then the Lady Mustangs pulled off an incredible comeback to stun San Angelo Lake View, 45-44, before a home crowd Friday to stay unbeaten this season at 2-0.
Lake View took a 44-37 lead with 1:43 left, and still led 44-42 and had the ball with 1.4 seconds to play. But Sweetwater found a way to win it, thanks to a Maidens turnover and Kendra Cros-sonâs 3-pointer off an inbounds pass from Suede Shirley at the buzzer.
