The Sweetwater High School golf team shot a 668 total this past weekend at the Andrews Boys Classic to place seventh out of 20 teams.
Sweetwater, which hosts its annual invitational tournament starting Friday at Sweetwater Country Club, was tied for ninth after an opening 335 but moved up two places after a 333 on the final day at Andrews.
Sweetwater High School’s track teams went to Snyder to compete at a season-opening meet on Friday.
The SHS girls scored 52 points for a fifth-place finish in their division and were led by senior Jayci Shelton, who won both hurdles and placed in two other events.
It’s not even mid-March, and Sweetwater’s baseball team has already equalled its win total for the entire 2010 season. The Mustangs can exceed it by defeating Midland Greenwood today at Newman Park starting at 6 p.m.
The Mustangs are off to an 8-2-1 start after going 8-21 a year ago, and five of this season’s victories — including four this past weekend at Sweetwater’s annual Wood Bat Classic — have come in the friendly confines of Newman Park.
Sweetwater finished 4-1-1 at its three-day event that ended Saturday.
After an 11-1 loss at San Angelo Lake View on Saturday, the Sweetwater High School softball team will try to rebound today when it goes to Colorado City for a 6:30 p.m. contest.
A nine-run, second-inning uprising by Lake View turned Saturday’s game into a blowout as Sweetwater fell to 6-4. The Lady Mustangs managed to avoid a shutout by scoring in the fifth inning, but still lost by the 10-run rule. Kinsey Browning, Jackie Carey and Suede Shirley had hits and Taylor McKoy, Alicia Finn and Maty Montgomery pitched. Sweetwater committed four errors.
These three Roscoe athletes have qualified for the Class 1A regional powerlifting meet to be held Saturday at Sundown High School. Jose Rangel will compete in the 148-pound class, while Landon Jones will compete in the 181-pound class and Corey Hatcher in the 242-pound class.
Sweetwater High School’s Kelsey Painter and Bri Munoz will go to the state powerlifting meet in Corpus Christi later this month after qualifying at the regional meet that was held Saturday in Odessa.
Painter lifted a total of 675 pounds for a third-place finish in the 132-pound class. Munoz placed fourth in the 105-pound class, but also qualified for the state meet because her 550 total was the best of any Class 3A athlete in her weight class.
Three Sweetwater High School girls basketball players have earned recognition on the all-District 5-3A squad for their outstanding play this past season.
Alicia Finn, a 5-11 junior post who was the Lady Mustangs’ leading scorer and rebounder in district play, earned first team honors while Taylor McKoy, a 5-8 senior post, was chosen to the second team.
Kinsey Browning, a 5-3 junior guard, received all-district honorable mention.
Callie Sandusky and Sierra Allen have received two of District 11-1A’s top honors for Highland on the all-district girls basketball team. Sandusky was chosen as the defensive player of the year and Allen was named newcomer of the year. Another Highland player, Kara Hughey, was also selected to the 11-1A all-district team.
Highland was the district runnerup and finished with a 22-12 record this season, making the Region II-A tournament before losing to Newcastle in the semifinals.
The Sweetwater High School varsity baseball team had a 2-0-1 record through Friday at the 2011 Wood Bat Classic tournament held at Newman Park, and pitching was a big reason why. Shown is freshman Kaleb Hoover, who on Thursday threw a five-inning no-hitter in a 7-0 win over Post. The Mustangs also tied Ozona 5-5 on Friday before the game was called due to the tournament time limit. Sweetwater was 6-1-1 going into Saturday’s final day of the event when the team was scheduled to play games against Post, Slaton and Clyde.
