Roscoe kicked off District 7-1A, Division II play with a 14-0 win over Baird’s Bears on Friday. The big news? Not only was it the team’s first win, but also Roscoe’s first victory since late in the 2010 season.
Roscoe (1-3) got touch-downs from Eduardo Gal-legos and Vincent Pantoja, and the defense shut down Baird (1-3) to complete the victory. The Bears finished with just 157 yards.
Pantoja gave the Plowboys a 6-0 lead when he scored on a 16-yard run in the first quarter.
Sweetwater’s freshman football team improved to 4-1 by defeating Brownwood 16-6 here Thursday.

After getting a week off, Roscoe’s football team is back in action today to start District 7-1A, Division II play at Baird. Roscoe (0-3) is still looking for its first win of the 2012 season after losses to De Leon, Irion County and Miles so far. However, the Plowboys face a Baird team (1-2) that has lost to De Leon and Haskell after defeating Menard in its season opener.
The Sweetwater volleyball team collected its first win in district play by defeating Snyder on Tuesday.
Now, Sweetwater (1-1) is back home Saturday to face a Big Spring team at 2 p.m. that is tied with Sweetwater in the district race for third place after losing to co-leader Wylie on Tuesday.
Big Spring (No. 17) is one of three District 4-3A teams ranked among the state’s top 20 by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
Wylie (2-0) is No. 1, while Monahans, which is also 2-0 in District 4-3A, is No. 20 in the latest poll.
It’s been only 11 months, but plenty has changed since Sweetwater and Brownwood last met on the football field this past October.
Thanks to UIL realign-ment in February, the former District 5-3A rivals are in separate districts. Sweet-water is in 4-3A along with five other schools from West Texas, while Brownwood has been moved into 8-3A with five other schools that are all in Central Texas.
Andrew Davis is the Football Player of the Week for Sweetwater. Davis, a 270-pound junior starter on the offensive line, had nine pancake blocks last week against Wall.
