Mustangs hope today isn’t the end

October 28, 2011

It won’t be Game 7 of the World Series, but the stakes for tonight’s game between Sweetwater and Brownwood at Mustang Bowl — which is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m. — will be just about as high.
It’s the season finale for Sweetwater (1-2, 4-5), which must beat Brownwood to have a shot at claiming a playoff berth for the first time since 2008. The Lions come in at 1-1, 5-3 and still have a game with Wylie to end their regular season.
Snyder and Wylie, who are both 2-0 in district, will play tonight in Wylie for the outright 5-3A lead.

SW looks to extend season

October 27, 2011

Sweetwater wraps up its season Friday when it hosts Brownwood at Mustang Bowl. Or does it? Coach Craig Slaughter sure hopes that’s not the case.
Because for the first time in Slaughter’s three-year tenure, his team is playing for a trip to the playoffs.
Sweetwater (4-5 season, 1-2 district) can also knock Brownwood (5-3, 1-1) com-pletely out of the playoff picture with a win, assuming Wylie also wins Friday over Snyder. The Bulldogs and Tigers are both 2-0 in District 5-3A.

October 27, 2011

Wylie sweeps S’water

October 26, 2011

Needing a win for a shot at the playoffs, Sweetwater’s volleyball team instead saw its season end here Tues-day as Wylie came to Mus-tang Gym and swept away the Lady Mustangs in three games 25-13, 25-20, 25-18.
Wylie, the district cham-pion, is 8-0 and 35-6 overall while Sweetwater ends its year at 3-5, 19-19. Despite the loss, coach Liz Miller said her team made significant progress this season. “This was a very good group to work with,” she said, “and we have a lot to look forward to next year.”

Lady Stangs need a win in finale

October 25, 2011

Sweetwater will host first-place Wylie in its final Dis-trict 5-3A volleyball match at 6:30 p.m. today. But if the Lady Mustangs (3-4 dis-trict, 19-18 overall) can pull off an upset, they have a chance to extend their sea-son beyond today.
Big Spring and Brown-wood, who are both 4-3, are tied for second place in district and face each other this Friday. The winner will claim the No. 2 seed in Dis-trict 5-3A. The loser, how-ever, faces a play-in against Sweetwater for the No. 3 spot if the Lady Mustangs upset Wylie (7-0), the No. 1 seed out of the district.
