JV, freshman boys defeat Ballinger to stay on a roll

Sweetwater’s two boys sub-varsity teams continued their winning ways here on Friday by defeating Ballinger squads.
The JV boys are now 13-5 after they rallied for a 45-33 win, and the freshman boys improved their mark to 8-3 by beating Ballinger 47-17 in their first game of 2012.
Trey Taylor poured in 24 points for the JV, who came back strong in the second half after trailing 10-8 at the end of the first quarter and by three points, 21-18, at halftime. Sweetwater was up by three points (28-25) after winning the third per-iod 10-4, then pulled away with a 17-8 finish.

JV girls lose to Aspermont

Sweetwater’s JV girls basketball team got in one final non-district game on Friday. The Lady Mustangs traveled to Aspermont and lost to its varsity team, 53-43, after trailing by just two points at the end of three quarters.

Area teams get just one district victory

The state-ranked High-land girls were the only area team to win on Friday among the five high school squads from Nolan County who competed in district basketball games.
Highland, ranked No. 21 in Class A, Division II, won its contest at Trent 41-28 to improve to 16-6 overall and 4-1 in district.
Sierra Allen scored 19 points to pace the Lady Hornets. Kara Hughey had seven, Beth Richburg five, Kaylee Martin four and Madison Moseley, Lora Stewart and Megan Thompson all finished with two points.

Roscoe, Highland jr high teams are victorious

Roscoe’s junior high boys edged Roby’s junior high boys 26-25 on Thursday, while Highland’s junior high girls began 2012 by crushing Ira by a score of 52-9 in their game that was also played on Thursday.
Sydny Helbert scored 16 points, Bailey Garrett and Kelsi Johns 12, Hannah Allen four and Karlie Allen, Hannah Kirby, Kailee Hall and Kassie Gunn two for Highland, which was ahead 30-7 at halftime and gave up just two more points.

Blackwell varsity girls and boys at Garden City starting at 6:30 p.m.
Sweetwater 7th and 8th grade ‘A’ boys play at Wall tournament.

Stangs go for 10th win

Although the wins have come against Class 1A and 2A competition, the Sweet-water boys basketball team is on a roll with four wins in its last five games.
The Mustangs, now 9-12, go for their 10th win today when they entertain Ballin-ger starting with the fresh-man game at 5 p.m.
Sweetwater is trying to build momentum as it pre-pares to start District 5-3A action Jan. 13. After today, the Mustangs go to Class 4A San Angelo Lake View next Tuesday and start district three days later when they host defending champion Abilene Wylie, which is currently ranked No. 21 in the state in Class 3A.

Plowgirls start district

Area basketball action resumes today as Roscoe’s girls will tip off district play and four other Nolan Coun-ty teams are also in action.
The Plowgirls take a 10-9 mark into their District 9-A, Division I opener as they host Munday. The Roscoe boys have an open date before starting district play on Tuesday.
In District 11-A, Division II, Highland’s teams will go to Trent today after beating Loraine on Tuesday. The girls (3-1) won 63-45 and the boys (1-1) won their game 34-31 in overtime.

Elks Lodge hold free throw Hoop Shoot at SIS gym

The Sweetwater Elks Lodge will have its annual free throw Hoop Shoot contest this Saturday, Jan. 7. This year’s event will be held at the Sweetwater Intermediate School gym.
The contest is open to all boys and girls between the ages of 8-13. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and shooting starts at 9:30 a.m.
Contestant age groups will be determined by a par-ticipant’s age as of April 1, 2012. For instance, if a contestant is 7 years old on April 1 they are too young to participate, while if the contestant is 14 years old on April 1 they are too old.

Mustangs use fast start to beat Roby

After compiling just a 5-11 record prior to the holiday break, the Sweetwater boys basketball team is starting to pile up some victories.
The Mustangs began 2012 with a dominating 64-39 win at home over Roby on Tuesday, their fourth win the past five games.
The most dominating stretch came near the start of the contest. Sweetwater outscored the Lions 19-3 in the final five minutes of the first quarter to open a 23-7 advantage, and held leads of between 12 and 28 points the rest of the way.

Lady Mustangs romp in their final district tuneup

The Sweetwater girls’ up-and-down basketball season is back on the upswing, and it couldn’t come at a better time. A 55-25 blowout win against Roby here Tuesday was the eighth in the past 11 games as the Lady Mus-tangs ended the non-dis-trict portion of their sched-ule with a 14-11 record.
“I think we’ve stepped our game up. Our last three games have been the best games of our season,” said Sweetwater head coach Candice Wyatt, whose team began 2012 with a bang after finishing second at the Breckenridge tournament last week, losing the title game to Tolar by one point.
