The seventh annual Sam-my Baugh Classic makes its return to Mustang Bowl on Thursday, with three games on tap this year.
Sweetwater and Roscoe are playing in the Classic for the seventh straight year but are facing different opponents than in 2010, and two new teams â Rotan and Ranger â will be squaring off the final day.
Roscoe (0-1) will be seeking its first win when it plays Hawley (1-0) in Thursdayâs opener at 7:30 p.m., while Sweetwater (1-0) â which is coming off a 10-0 season-opening win over Vernon at the Bowl â will be taking on No. 9-ranked Monahans (1-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Despite losing its two bracket play matches on Saturday at a weekend tourney in Wolfforth Frenship, the Sweetwater High School volleyball team has exceeded its victory total for the entire 2010 season.
Sweetwater went 2-1 in Fridayâs pool play and will enter todayâs match at Abilene Cooper with a 12-10 record. The match will begin at approximately 6 p.m. The Lady Mustangs ended 2010 with an overall mark of 11-28.
Josh Larue is the first Sweetwater High School Player of the Week. The 5-8, 220-pound senior defensive tackle came up big in the Mustangsâ 10-0 season-opening win over Vernon last Friday. He had five solo tackles, three for a loss, two sacks, one quarterback pressure and one assisted tackle.
MCCAMEY â Water Valley needed just one half of football to defeat Blackwell Saturday as it cruised to a 78-6 victory at the West Texas Six-Man Shootout.
Water Valley, in its first game under ex-Highland coach Karry Owens, enjoyed a 46-6 advantage at the end of the first period and added 32 points in the second stanza to end the game due to six-manâs 45-point mercy rule.
Jayden Jones scored the only Blackwell points on a 3-yard run in the first quarter. He was the Hornetsâ leading rusher with 30 yards on seven carries and also caught a 36-yard pass.
Roscoe quarterback Dillon Freeman is pictured in action during the team's season-opening football game. The Plowboys began on Friday at Albany and lost to the state-ranked Lions 57-7. Roscoe will try to regroup when the team takes on Hawley at Sweetwaterâs Sammy Baugh Classic at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Highland will travel to Loraine on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game. The Hornets began Thursday and lost 24-8 to Bryson at the âRumble in the Jumbleâ Classic in Trent.
For the second straight week, Sweetwaterâs offense had a monster, clock-eating scoring drive when the Mustangs opened their season Friday against the Vernon Lions.
Sweetwater took 18 plays to go 69 yards, leading to Ryan Linebaughâs 1-yard touchdown run with 11:13 left in the second quarter that put his team up 7-0.
But, with the exception of another great showing by the Mustangsâ new kicker, Tadeo Canon-Masjoan, the offensive highlights after that were few. That meant Sweetwaterâs defense had to step up to the challenge, and did it ever.
ALBANY â The Roscoe Plowboys hit the road to face a very tough Albany team Friday in its season opener, and the Lions rolled to a 57-7 win.
Albany, a top-10 team in most preseason polls, was ahead 28-0 after one quarter and never looked back. Five players accounted for the Lionsâ eight touchdowns, seven of them on long-distance plays of at least 29 yards.
TRENT â The Highland Hornets put up a respecta-ble defensive effort in their opening game with Bryson on Thursday, but managed just one score as the Cow-boys won the contest 24-8.
Highland got its touch-down on Tyler Falconâs 3-yard run in the first quarter. Steven Tester kicked the PAT to tie the game at 8, but the Hornets didnât score again. Meanwhile, Bryson came back with two more touchdowns to seal the win. The game was played at Trent as part of the Rumble in the Jungle Classic.
Sweetwaterâs two junior varsity football teams won their season openers at Vernon on Thursday.
